FYI: That link is not related to Mercedes-Benz supporting Apple CarPlay in their head units. It is in reference to a 3rd party solution from *******.

Yeah I see your point. I would consider this for my '10 E-Class but I do plan on purchasing a GLS, more for the wife with my requirements of course and I would have the same concern plus impacting our warranty.

MB announced the 2017 SL will support Apple CarPlay:

I hope this means CarPlay is also coming to the 2017 GLS.

I had a chance to demo CarPlay in a new GLA. First you dock your iPhone via a Lightning Adapter/USB cable. Then the screen ask you to confirm if you would like to use CarPlay. Confirm and you're ready to roll. Everything worked as expected and screens render beautifully. Having access to Siri from a press of the steering wheel voice button is very cool. I'm looking forward to having CarPlay in my new GLS550 when it arrives. Its scheduled to be built April (1st decade) so it should be delivered to the dealership in early May.

Apple CarPlay Dreams
Below is the response from MB when I asked about retrofitting this standard feature into my pre CarPlay 2016 GLE450. Undoubtably this will impact the resale value of my car. My first MB and this puts a bad taste in my mouth...

Mercedes-Benz: I purchased a GLE450 built prior to MB building Apple CarPlay...

Dear Mr. Jackson,
Thank you for reaching out to us at Mercedes-Benz USA.
I am sorry to say that it isn't possible to retrofit the Apple CarPlay feature to a vehicle. The equipment for compatibility must have been installed at the factory. For that reason, it isn't possible to use Apple CarPlay with a vehicle that was built after the release of Apple CarPlay in Mercedes-Benz cars.
I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.
Sincerely,
Jennifer P.

I don't believe this will impact the resale of your car. Your car should be worth what it is without CarPlay.
There is a third party solution that was posted a few weeks ago, the very first post in this thread.

*******
Seems they don't make a ******* for a 2016 MB GLE. But even if there was I wouldn't want to pay hundreds of dollars to give me something that Mercedes should have since it is a standard feature on my vehicle.

Technology changes and you cannot expect each change to retrofit into previous models. You would pay hundreds of dollars for it anyway.

You have two choices, invest in an aftermarket solution or bite the bullet and enjoy your vehicle.

Carplay
Carplay is experiencing growing pains not just in mb vehicles.
There would seem to be an undocumented 'u ' turn on which apps will be allowed.
You will notice that apart from imaps there are no "eyes off the road" apps available.
I have had a pioneer double din CarPlay unit in my w211 for about 12 months.
It replaced an OE Audio 20.
It works great on imaps,
Iphone works well, especially using siri (as long as you are in a good data reception area) and spoken and dictated texts
Calls are clear and very rarely drop out.Call recipients are often unaware call is from a vehicle.
Waze (navigation)will voice but no visuals.
Phone works on bluetooth allowing jumping in and out of car without cabling up.
Other apps need phone plugged in.

He is correct, if you download the 2017 GLS Command Manual, both CarPlay and Android Auto are listed. Its odd that MB wouldn't have made that clear in the pre-release build data. In any case, MB has both systems covered!

If you have it on, are you beholden to Apple's Maps app for Navi? I ask for two reasons. One, I don't love Maps. And two, relying strictly on Maps for navigation demands you have a decent data usage plan, right?
#25
No, it's only activated when/if your phone is plugged in via USB... both Apple and Android. However, when either system is active, car nav is disabled.
