Dash Cam wiring

I would like to install a dash cam into my GLS, I’ve seen sedan discussion about same but not on this vehicle. Has anyone hardwired this type of device or perhaps a radar detector. My unit requires a hot wire and a switched connection, and of course suggests a direct fuse box route. However getting through the firewall is not child’s play, What about the fuses under the second seat? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Check the GLE forum should be almost identical since they The GLE and GLS are the same platform.

The easiest way is indeed the fuse box below the rear seats. You can use the cigarette lighter fuse as ignition only fuse. You can then route the cables below the carpet, into the B-pillar, and all to way to the center rear mirror. Dont use the fuses in the engine compartment as they are very difficult to access from the cabin, and dont use the fuses on the passenger side door jam as all of them are permanently powered.

What about the rear view mirror console? Is it safe to hardwire there?

Yes it is safe. The only thing is that this is permanently powered, so your dashcam will stay ON all the time. One ML63 owner has done it and explains pretty well how to do so. He is called Nanook. You can look him up on the chat.

I'm trying to figure out the radar detector hardwire. I guess mirror isn't an option if it's always on. Don't want to unplug/turn it off every time.

Are there any radar detectors that shut-off when no movement is detected for a period of time?
