Thumbs up Great winter tire news!!!

Mercedes USA is offering a 20' wheel and tire winter combo for 3038 dollars!!!!! That's only 500 more than a non OEM set from tirerack. As far as MB OEM is concerned its a steal. If you are in need call, your dealer ASAP.

They dont specify but Im pretty darned sure they are pirellis winter scorpions. They are the same tire as the sottozero. MB is now offering a choice; 21in for 4k and 20 for 3k. I guess MB does read what we post around here after all....As we are well aware, there arent many choices in the market.

I you have a 'flared' version (like the US 550 or the Euro exterior AMG package) check your ET's and rim width. 20 or not, your car is going to look really funky with ET62's on 8.5's. MB Original or not.

They are 8.5 since the tires are 275 instead of 295, exactly what you would want in a snow tire, narrower and taller.

What makes you think a 275 won't fit correctly on a 9 or even 9.5 ? Regardless, it's not my point. AFAIK MB do even not have the correct rims (in 19 OR 20) to position the wheels correctly on a 'flared' vehicle. It's going to look ewwwwwwwwww.

You are confusing rim width with offset. If the rim is narrower you offset the rim more. My E43 has narrow winter rims front and rear, since the offest is done correctly you dont even notice that the setup is not staggered. The outside of the tire and rim is exactly where it would be with the summer set.

Just checked the specs, as expected the offset is different. On the smaller rim offset is ET 62 while the other one is 46. Thus they will look essentially the same aside from the -1 diameter. The larger is better looking IMO given that its the same turbine style as my 43. It is, however, a major pain to keep clean !

I assure you I am confusing nothing. I've said my piece. Enjoy.

The brand of snow tire you use depends on flavor, xice and blizzaks have ultimate traction but are the most compromised on everything else particularly the blizzaks. Sottozeros are a little less snow capable but a lot better on dry winter conditions. If you have 4 matic all will handle anything winter can dish your way. Never had hakkas since they dont come in many sizes in the US.

I have gl550 et 45 wheels on my gl450. They look exactly the same as the oem et62 wheels, but they are 20x10 wheels with 275 serise winter tire.
17mm is slightly more than 1/2" difference, which probably more than made up by the broad shoulder tread design of most snow tires.

Correct, the whole idea of offset is to maintain the outside edge of the tire in the same place. The narrowness of the tire can only be appriciated, if at all, from the front or the rear. Given the the width is only 20 mm different you can only tell on two cars side by side. Again I would would like to impress, as far as snow performance is concerned, taller and thinner are desirable features.

In this https://mbworld.org/forums/attachmen...-22_170705.pdf document on one of the final pages are the MB part numbers for MB GLS factory wheels

Just for comparison purposes I've made the following quick shots. Bear in mind that in my country all GLS's bar the AMG are narrowbodies. If you get the AMG exterior package the 21's are included.

So, this is the pic with the 'standard' 21" 10" wide 295 tire ET 46

This is a 275/50 on a 20" 9" wide ET 35 rim

Although the Conti 'balloons' more, yo can see that the tire thread and rim outer are roughly in the same place. If you are going to use 8.5's with an ET 62 your rim/tire is going to move way more to the inside. Of course this may be preferable for winter running, but I think it makes the GLS look funny.

I apologise for the pics falling over, I've tried to fix it, but I'm too stupid.

YMMV

That is for that particuarly ugly rim. On the mercedes rim it stays "flush" simply by increasing the thickness of the hub's interior aspect and burying the lug nuts deeper into the rim. If you look at the pics, on the website, you will see there is no flaring on the rim at all.

Why don't you post some nice 'real world' pictures of that ?

As soon as my vehicle is delivered I will! Meanwhile you misguided comments will probably keep some from taking a rare good deal from MB.
