Thank you, I did see that but was hoping for a solution that is more OEM like than the OBD dongle. As last resort I will keep that in mind.

Dear

Thank you for taking the time to contact MBUSA.

We have reached out to the dealership who will be researching this information with our engineering team. They should be connecting with you within a few days.

We appreciate your patience while being reviewed. Please let us know if you have not had contact within 3 business days.

Have an enjoyable weekend.

I have a 2017 GLS550 that I purchased new from a dealership. My COMMAND software do not have Android Auto. Although in every piece of Mercedes literature, documents, web-sites and other media confirms that Android Auto is available. My vehicle do not have it. I have tried unsuccessfully at my dealer where I purchase my vehicle from cannot update. They confirmed that my vehicle VMI has 16U(Apple Carplay) but does not have 17U(Android Auto) in the build. There seems to be some confusion at Mercedes USA customer service in regards to my GLS550. They agree that my vehicle should have it. But the fact that my dealer confirms that it is not physically there, I cannot interface the Android Auto application with my COMMAND software in my vehicle. I need for Mercedes to provide a way for me to obtain this. Even if the VIN of my vehicle shows that it is some of the first vehicle builds do not have the 17U. Logistically, there is no reason why you cannot provide the software to your dealers to update the COMMAND on my 2017 GLS550. Please have your technical managers or product management manager reach out to me so we can resolve this. Thank you.

Yes, if android auto was not a configured option, android will not connect.

To be clear, our experience

Given smartphone integration and Apple car play shows up on the build detail. No amount of effort will get android auto to work. PDF or not.

if android auto was a build option, others are correct, you wouldn’t see android auto on the command until you follow the PDF, and boom, there it is.

Wife had an old iPhone which wasn’t car play compatible. I had and loved my Android. No amount of effort would get android auto to work, since android was not an option on the build sheet. Dealer couldn’t make it work, and said not configurable without a new command center with the option built in. WTHeck?

Solution, bought two new iPhones and car play works hard wired to the device.

But new cars have Bluetooth CarPlay. WTHeck, you can’t get a mb software update to enable CarPlay Bluetooth?

Oh my, that’s surprisingly sad given the state of technology and software integration.

Currently at the dealership..

Gents I recently purchased 17 GLS 550 without the Android Auto software option, spoke with MBUSA and they said local dealer should be able to upgrade. Left at the dealership on Thursday, called on Friday and they said the update they had didn't have it so they are contacting MBUSA for a patch .. asked me to sign a paper that it wouldn't cost more than an Hour's labor $188. .. gave me a GLB and send me away.. keep you posted.

If your dealer value your business, they should not charge you for the uodate.

It's Miami... I would be surprised if $188 is the only thing I have to pay...

Update

Here is the update.. dealer took a couple of days but was able to update software and Android Auto is running now. Noticed after a day or so that the Cursor went away and I couldn't see what I was pointing to even though it's still selected stuff , reset the phone and has worked like a charm since. Sidenote for anyone doing this - make sure you mention that you spoke with MB USA and that you know it's available for your model, also ask how long it will take, standard response is 1 hour of labor, have them print and sign that you will not be charged more than that unless spoken with you... They put some labor into it and I'm sure would have charged me if I had not signed.
now it's time to decide on a decent Sub , thinking about JBL in spare tire compartment, anyone do this ? I have the HK system..

My wife's GLS450 Android Auto was working fine for me and then a couple of years ago when I upgraded my phone from a Galaxy 7 (I think it was) that one was working on Android Auto then when I got the Note 9 it no longer recognizes my phone when it is plugged in... It is a little frustrating, but my wife has 2 IPhones so when we are traveling I have to use one of hers

It could be that your software might need an update anyway... I am using Samsung Note 10 and so far no issues...

PS. Pioneer subwoofer and amp combo has arrived and going into the spare tire compartment. Pictures to follow.. anyone need the HK subwoofer let me know.

I use lots of other apps during my drive to listen music, audiobooks, podcasts, receive calls from overseas family (via whatapps, telegram), and list goes on. So my use of AA apps during my drive is very convenient and ubiquitous, all done in a safe manner. It must be super exciting being a passenger in your car without ear buds. 😂 😂 😆

I agree. I love apple car play. I just talk out my messages, have them read to me, etc. Keeps my eyes mostly on the road and must less distracted. I just wish apple CarPlay, the "auto announce feature would wait for you to say reply after it auto announces the message. It seems kinda dumb they've not had that feature. Then you need to open the message or say Hey Siri, reply to so and so. It's the little things...

I seem to recall the reason given for not having cup holders in the W126 series was because drivers shouldn't be distracted by cups of coffee. My, how things have changed....

2017 GLS android Auto issue

I spent much time researching since my 2017 GLS didn't come with Android Auto. It was an early 2016 production. I tried contacting Mercedes . Didnt get any response. Someone suggested trying a wireless adapter/ dongle from Amazon which cost like 70 bucks. Decided to give it a try since there are not many options left. I got the product and followed the manufacturer's instructions and guess what Android Auto is working on my GLS 450 (x166). Thank God it is working. Here is the link to the product. Any one has the same issue this could be helpful. This says it is an adapter to make it wireless but Android Auto will work.

So to revive an old thread. Looking at an early release 2017 that lastvin shows 16u but not 15u. I haven't checked to see if maybe it has already been updated to have Android auto. Just wanted to see if anyone has successfully gotten MB to update one that isn't the original owner?
TIA

So it activated your Android auto... Does it also make it wireless?

MB dealer wasn’t very interested in helping years ago but I used an ODB coder dongle from eBay and that worked fine. My old GLS550 is currently for sale at a dealer, you might luck out and find someone has added it to the one you are looking at.

So I bought the vehicle, did a thorough inspection because it has 110k miles, even borescoped the cylinders looked pretty clean inside.(the dealer let me "testdrive" overnight its the only way I could do it. It does not have Android Auto. I bought the Carlinkit 5 off Amazon to see if just that will do the trick like carlink 4 did for Matthew28mar. if not I will do an ebay dongle.
the VMI sheet on this thing is close to 35 pages I think. very extensive service history at the same MB dealer.

2017 iridium silver GLS550 with 110k miles. Got it for $22k original sticker was $108k. Carlinkit 4 did the trick of making Android Auto work. Though you connect to the device instead of the car. And it is wireless Android Auto. Now just need to unplug the oil pressure solenoid... I am assuming these have them just like the M157 does.

Ok have been using the Carlinkit 4.0 and it has been great, except, does anyone have issues using handsfree. If I get a call, and answer with the rotary dial, all is good, but if I place a call, they either can't hear me, or I can't hear them, and have to put my phone on speaker to talk.
Anyone else have this issue and resolved it?
