Replaced steering gear, coding error, any fix?

I have a gls550 2017. Electric steering gear had fault, so I replaced it.
There is no SCN coding needed, no initial startup, just a coding reset where it takes its variant coding from the central gateway

I did this before on a 2014 gl550 and it worked fine

did it on this one and it seems to go OK, drives OK, no error in steering.... until, car powers down, goes to sleep. next time key is used, it has power steering error and says its has configuration/coding error. Shows original and new VIN number in the values boxes. The 2014 one I did also shows both vins but worked fine

Have they changed the software now to stop people using used units and forcing to buy new. Or could it be that its not getting the correct info from central gateway?? (have ordered another gateway just in case)

any suggestions welcome

Did you use Xentry to diagnose the issue and did you use Xentry to review the coding-----two VIN's that's a no no!

yes xentry said coding error, so I reset it (where it takes the values from the central gateway), error disappears until restart then comes back.

I would usually agree on the 2 VINS being a no no, but the 2014 GL450 I have, electric steering gear swapped fine, still shows 2 VINS but has never come up with any error

really want to find out for sure before taking the plunge on a brand new steering gear

SOLVED

All fixed. No need to change the steering again, am very pleased

A user on another forum did it for me via Vediamo, changed the coding to V5 and reset the unit, works fine now
