Many of these posts mention rear tires. Some mention that the rear tires are more worn than the fronts. One mentions the rear tires are very worn.
It is common knowledge that these cars are tough on rear tires. They are heavy and the rear suspension has a lot of reverse camber. Any issue with alignment or tire pressure will amplify wear.
The best tires (those with the most traction) should always be on the back for directional stability.
Regardless of drive type (FWD, RWD, 4WD, AWD) a car with locked or spinning rear tires will oversteer. The same car with locked or spinning front tires will understeer, which is much easier for most drivers (and stability systems) to deal with.

Strange wisdom. I drive very aggressively, and about half the time it's in wet weather. As long as my tires have tread and are sticky, I never have issues with using cruise control in the rain. The safety systems like ESP and EBD kick in well before I get into trouble.

The op most likely hydroplaned and car went out of control ... look up hydroplaning if you're not sure what that does ... the remedy is to reduce speed, avoid puddles of you can amd get a tire with good wet traction (meaning it will have canals to channel water out of the tire tread) ... MB or Bentley, all will do the same if subjected to hydroplaning ...

I found your message, my brother had a very big car accident on Aug 30th, the car was destroyed ( thanks god no one died), exactly the same thing happened, his 2018 GLS450, with two new tires from MB service center, totally lost control in a light raining day.
First, I strongly suggest you don't drive your GLS550 and go to MB service center to check it ASAP.
We will contact MB and a law firm to looking for what happen to the car.

Performance tires + hydroplaning + ALKA = a perfect storm. There was a fatal accident nearby me a couple years ago. Some guy was driving the 65 mph speed limit in heavy rain, hydroplaned and took out another vehicle. An out of state family of four vacationing -- killed them all. How do you live with that? Many folks don't know that they can be ticketed for reckless driving when they're driving the speed limit in adverse conditions.

My solution after getting rid of the, (in my opinion) the very poor performing and cracked sidewall,(failed state insp), Contenental's.
Oh, and they had less than 13000 mi use.
