Factory Warranty Issue

I purchased a 2018 GLS 550 back in March from a dealership(not a Mercedes dealer). The car was advertised as having factory warranty until Feb 2023. The car only had 2000 miles on it. The story was a a Mercedes exec had driven it and the car had never been registered or titled. I went ahead and purchased the car. At the same time I reached out to get pricing on an extended warranty. At the time he told me the same info, that the factory warranty was expiring in Feb 2023. Fast forward to last week when we had to take the car in to the local to dealer to get a new windshield. I noticed on the work order that it showed a warranty start date of August 2017 not Feb 2019. I inquired about what could've happened to change the date and they really couldn't give me any good reason. I went back too the guy for the extended warranty and he said the system was now showing a warranty start date of August 2017. I asked why this could've changed and he said there was a bunch of reasons but couldn't speculate since he didn't sell the car.

I've tried reaching out to where I purchased the car but haven't heard back yet. Anyone here have a recommendation of where I go from here? It ends up being a huge deal to me as I overpaid for the car if there was really only that much warranty remaining. Any suggestions would be hugely appreciated.

Just from my experience and talking to the dealer when I bought the car, the warranty starts when the vehicle is manufactured so the warranty starting in 2017 on a 2018 vehicle is possible. I also bought a 2017 MB in 2018, and the warranty started in 2016 for me and ended in 2020 or 50K miles. I feel like you maybe able to get some money back but it will take time, and patients. Did they charge you extra for the warranty? Was the extended warranty a 3rd party? After buying the car from a non MB dealership, I got the extended warranty from a MB dealership after. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the response. The extended warranty is from a 3rd party MB dealer, after I purchased from a non MB dealer. In my experience the warranty usually starts when someone purchases the car, although i'm not sure how it works if a MB exec drives the car for awhile. I know at some point they have to punch the warranty.

Above is false. Warranty for Mercedes starts when first "sale" is recorded. For example, there are still some (very few) "left over" 2019 MY W166 GLE63s with build date of August 2018. If such a car is purchased in August 2020 new, warranty starts on the date of delivery (in August 2020) regardless when car was manufactured. However, if a vehicle was purchased used, then warranty started when the first retail sale was recorded.

Right, I agree with what was said before. I've been told before if it's a demo car, at some point they have to punch the warranty which is what I was told was done in February 2019. It just doesn't make sense that now the system says it started in August 2017. Is there somewhere with Mercedes I can talk to someone about this or is my only option trying to get the place where i purchased it to respond?

The problem is the vehicle was purchased from a non-MB dealer. The warranty starts when it was "punched" by Mercedes dealer. Carfax should reflect it as well (did you get the Carfax?). You can contact the selling dealer, but if warranty start date was provided only verbally, then I do not see what can be done. If Mercedes corporate has in service date of August 2017, then that is when the warranty started and if so then the selling non-MB dealer has clearly mislead.

Correct. Why would a Mercedes executive's car be sold by a non-dealer? The dealer punched it to show it sold in order to increase their next allocation.

I have it in an email from the selling dealership saying when the factory warranty expires. It was also the main part of their ad on Cars.com, unfortunately I don't have a copy of that but I do have the email. The Carfax actually showed a different date all together, one in the middle of the two dates. It looked like this dealer had bought it from another dealer. The part that doesn't make sense is this seems like it was changed after the fact because the dealer where i was going to purchase the ELW confirmed the date, and now it's different?

Do you have a mercedes me subscription? My warranty expiration date is shown in the mercedes me app. The subscription was included with my 2017 vehicle, which I bought from a third party non-MB dealer. Your 2018 should have several years of included subscription to mercedes me.

Have a look here: https://www.mbusa.com/en/mbrace#mercedes-me

and here: https://www.mbusa.com/vcm/MB/Digital...0814_KH_v2.pdf

It's called mbrace. I think the subscription service is called mbrace, the app is called mercedes me. To my knowledge, it was included with certain model year vehicles (2016-2018 or so) and is transferrable, in other words it stays with the vehicle.

mbrace/mercedes me was replaced by mercedes me connect in 2019 (I think). The 2016-2018 service was provided by Verizon, and was pitifully fraught with bugs in its first 18 months of existence. Surprise that Mercedes would flop on a new product or service offering.

Update, the dealer admitted that they screwed up the date. They'd only pay for half of the ELW which seems ridiculous to me. I purchased a car that they stated had factory warranty until Feb 2023, it ends up I actually have factory warranty until August 2021. A huge difference. Even if they pay for all of the warranty, I still overpaid for the car. I'm willing to accept if they pay for the ELW but I feel I shouldn't have to come out of pocket for their mistake. What are my options here? Am I in the right since it was their error or am I just screwed? How far should I push this?

@jw3571 How much is the ELW? You are likely talking about a small claims court process, if you decide to take legal action. Seems like alot of effort for potentially small and uncertain payoff. The other option is to negotiate for the dealer to pay for more than 50% of the ELW. Another option is to move on and count it as tuition expense in the School of Life.

@jw3571 So the dispute is over $2,500, correct? Putting that in perspective with the total transaction price is how I would look at this. Is $2,500 worth the time, effort and aggravation to either negotiate a better deal with the dealer, or initiate a legal dispute? Negotiation is free (no financial cost) other than time and effort. The question is are you willing to take it further?

That is for 3YR upto 100K miles? Who did you get this quote from? GLS should be tier2 (same as GL) and if so then should be $4K for 3yr/100k.

In any event get in touch with warranty discounters (Jeff Jackson is the one I've used, but there are others).
