high beam lights

high beam lights
Just bought 2018 GLS450 . With the lights on AUTO ,when I push the stick forward the high beam lights don't work, they do when pushing inwards. If lights are on manual then it works fine. All my previous Mercedes didn't have this issue. Operator error?

When you push the arm forward and the A comes on that means the high beams should come on ONLY when oncoming headlights are not detected.
I have the upgraded headlight package and that is how it works for me.

I was in the NC mountains last week and the roads to my house were pitch dark and I wanted to see more ahead of me. The high beams will not engage pushing the stick forward . If I put the switch on manual then the high beams work

Welcome to the frustrating world of Auto LEDs.
In auto mode your high beams will only come on after you have reached a certain speed and provided you are not in a built up area.....that's how they work on European models anyway!!

In the X166 LED headlights were an option. It was called something like the 'lighting package'. Pretty sure the 'highbeam assist' was part of that package. If the GLS doesn't have the LED lighting package, then the high beams work whenever you manually switch them on. So the highbeams work differently depending on what type of headlights your car was equipped with.

You can turn off auto high beam assist. Then you can control as you wish like normal. I disabled it as it was too late and turning on or too early turning off. Or I wanted them on to give better light and wouldn’t bc of the assist being on.
