Question Driver Assistance Package Plus - how good is it?

I'm planning to buy GLS 450 off the lot ( rather than ordering) and majority of the cars I see do not have Driver Assistance Package Plus. Can anyone share their experiences with driver assistance aid either on 2020 GLS
or on any latest models of MB cars. I don't want to miss out on safety and would especially like to know how good emergency braking systems work.
Here is description of the package ( from MB dealer web site) :

DRIVER ASSISTANCE PACKAGE PLUS

Active emergency stop assist, active lane change assist, route-based speed adaptation, active brake assist w/cross-traffic function, evasive steering assist and active blind-spot assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, Active Steering Assist, Traffic Sign Assist, Active Speed Limit Assist, Active Stop & Go Assist, LED Lighting, PRE-SAFE Impulse Side, Driving Assistance Plus

Any info or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

It's a great feature, but on the new GLS Mercedes sort of ruined how you activate it. On other cars and older cars, there was a stock on the steering wheel that let you activate/control it. Now there are just buttons on the wheel you need to figure out/manage to use it. I still can't figure the buttons out. The stock was better and more natural.

With that aside, I use it all the time on the highway or long straightaways. It's extremely accurate, except when people in front of you turn off or pull in front of you. It has serious problems detecting cars in those situations, and you risk getting in an accident if you trust it to much.

The steering assist is absolute garbage. I've used it a few times and every time I end up turning it off within 15 seconds because it will seriously get you in an accident or let you go off the road.

But DISTRONIC is awesome, and the other features are too.

In addition to the GLS we have on order, I have a 2019 E450 Cabriolet which also has the steering wheel controlled DISTRONIC. I, personally, love the way it works on the steering wheel.

button push to turn the system on. Then
push up or down to adjust. On the freeways I use it 90% of the time.

Once I had my first car, a 2015 GL 450, with adaptive cruise control (part of Distronic Plus), I would never get a car without it.

I cannot imagine a scenario where someone would not order that package, which costs less than 10% of the car. It gives you so many safety features, plus all the conveniences of automation that you can choose to use or not.

Not reliable enough for me

I did not order it on my GLS and would not order in future until they get it near perfect. I don't travel too often in congested traffic but see how some may like the low speed stop and go assist. I have had similar systems before on 3 other cars including MB and don't like the number of false warnings. Also it doesn't work in many circumstances especially rain, snow, dirt, bugs, just too unreliable so I tended to ignore it. If you have it never rely on it, consider it as back up that may help if you are not attentive.

No more MB:(
I'd never go without it. Can't imagine spending this much on a vehicle and not having such an important feature.

GLC 43 Coupe
Hi -

I purchased a 2020 GLC 43 coupe with the driver assist package. One of the reasons I purchased Mercedes over other brands was based on research, and MB marketing promoting these features. Active brake assist was the most important from my perspective. And, indeed, it help me a avoid a potentially serious accident on the highway several months ago.

Unfortunately, active brake assist has been the most flaky. I have taken it in 3 times to Mercedes for software updates and other diagnostics to address the issue. Since acquiring the car in March, warning messages that active brake assist is either unavailable or limited constantly pop-up to the point of annoyance. Sometimes it say to consult the owners manual, other times to pull over. Bottom line is that it becomes uncertain whether the message is legitimate due to weather conditions or a dirty camera lens, or the system isn’t functioning at all. My last visit to MB was this week. I’m hopeful they’ve fixed it on the 3rd try but not convinced. Please see diagnosis data from the last visit:

I don’t think so. The messages came up when the car was clean, driving in clear, cloudy, snow or sunny, conditions. There was no pattern.

i will say that if the the final repair doesn’t take, I will be listing the car for sale. The car has been excellent otherwise.

2020 GLS450 (wife) / 2024 Ford Bronco (mine) / 2014 VW Tiquan (son)
We don’t have it, and don’t really miss not having it. Other than the cruise control aspect (which, as noted by others does have a few quirks in how it handles other cars sometimes), we didn’t see the need to have lane assist or speed assist, etc. We love the monitoring for traffic in the blind spot, and the parking sensors, and of course the great cameras all around (especially the 180 degree on front and back for parking lot maneuvers), and that’s really about all we use.

we had some winter weather here in DC this week, and the parking/collision sensors went a little wonky because they got caked with icy slush. Really a bit annoying for the car to buzz like crazy when it thinks you’re about to hit something, when there isn’t anything there to hit. So I can imagine how annoying the lane keep assist could possibly be when the cameras and sensors get caked with crud.

my wife isn’t tech like that, and the assists on driving would probably spook her and delay reflex reaction time for her. She is an excellent driver, but she is like me - only feels in complete control when in complete control.

Better than other manufacturer systems. The GM one slams on brakes if someone switches into your lane and is dangerous. MB gently does it in a safe manner. Even does better when switching lanes to pass others.

I purposely order my trucks and SUVs without it when possible. I will be ordering a new 580 without it, the dealer has one coming in my exact build on the way however it has the DAP Plus so I am going to order one without.

My husband bough two weeks ago the 2021 GLB and we didn’t know that it doesn’t come with this package. It has brake assistance. Blind sport some drive assistance. But not all of the above. I don’t know if I can add those features now the I have the car. I hate to pay 87 thousand dollars and the car doesn’t have all this features I’m thinking on trading the car next year hoping to be able and not to lose to much money any thoughts. Ty

I wish we would just order the car and not go with the one on the lot I love my car but doesn’t have many of the features. It doesn’t have Navigation system it has the apple play. It has the option to add it I think because it has the bottom. But I do wish that I could add this other features. I won’t mind paying an extra 10 thousand. Very sad

I don't understand why anyone would rather use factory navi instead of CarPlay and your favorite nav app?

Good reason. Until now CarPlay has been limited to just 1 screen, but I think latest version from apple allows for dual screens. Hopefully that will come to MB soon. I think bmw has is enabled with their new infotainment that they’re transitioning over to.

I wouldn't get a car in this category without it for the Safety benefit. It takes a little learning in order to let the car know you are in charge. My husband doesn't like that it doesn't let him drift on curves but it does if you put on gas.
It has literally 'halted' the car backing out of our slightly narrow driveway at higher speeds. It's more sensitive than our '14 GLS.

That said, cars are hard to come by.

Wouldn't buy it without it. Its ridiculous that at these prices they make you pay extra for it. Most of it is standard in a Subaru or Honda.
