Apple Play Question

Watched a couple videos on setting up Apple Play. Does the phone always have to be plugged in for this to work each time you drive? Still on a learning curve for things I haven't had.

From what I've read and watched, yes. There was mention of wireless Apple Car Play/Android Auto connections not being stable enough to satisfy MB, but also the fact that battery drain is high in this scenario, so they only offer wired still. I also understand that you can still have phone connectivity over Bluetooth for streaming audio and making phone calls, but of course this is a small subset of functionality compared to Car Play/Android Auto feature sets.

You’ll need an Apple FireWire to USB adapter cable to get CarPlay to work -the two included adapters are useful for charging only. 👍

You probably mean an apple “lightening” to USB-c cable (not just a traditional USB). I’m pretty sure this comes with the newer iphones and is available from Apple at the below think.

Is it just my car that has carplay plug only by the wireless charger in front of cup holders?Dont understand they don't have carplay plug in center console storage bin. Hate cords being visible.

There are also 2 USB C ports inside the center arm rest storage compartment that are supposed to be for multimedia devices, so I assume you can use them for an iPhone or USB stick but I haven't tried it. I use the wireless charger in front of the cup holders, so I bought a short Lightning to USB C cable to use with my phone and plug it in there.

yes i tried using usb c inside the storage compartment in center console and CarPlay does not work.Looks like only the plug by wireless charger is being used as CarPlay plug

Yes, it has to be plugged in to work. All USB ports are USB-C, so you'll need a USB-C to lighting cable to use Apple CarPlay. There's an adapter I saw online that's supposed to make your Apple CarPlay work wirelessly from your phone, at a pretty hefty price of $160. I haven't tried it or know how effective it is, but there are reviews on the website. https://carplay2air.com/

I should note that the website says the adapter works for Mercedes autos for years 2016-2019.

You need to keep it plugged in, only one of the USB-C ports works for data, wireless is not possible, and those 3rd party adapters are ****. I really hope MB updates it at some point with wireless because using those cables sucks on a vehicle that is so modern.

I've got one of these 12" USB-C to Lightning cables coming in today to address the problem of a long cord. I wish I could get smaller, but this is at least better than the typical 1 meter / 3 feet minimum.

Yes, you always need to have it plugged in and Yes it must be in the front port that is marked

Yes, I agree this is irritating. I have the same issue on my 2019 E450 Cabriolet (but at least it uses USB-A), but at least in that car I can close up the compartment and nobody sees the cables. While the GLS does have a sliding cover, when plugged in I find myself wanting to keep that door open as my current (1 meter) cable doesn't tuck under nicely.

Like others, I'm baffled why the storage compartment only allows for media input and is not compatible with Apple CarPlay/Google Android. It would be so much better!

Thanks. Those are great, I could only find 3 footers. These are so much better.

MB dropped the ball with their implementation of CarPlay. They had been promising wireless CarPlay prior to the release of the GLE and GLS but as you know that didn't happen. I owned 2 GL 550's and a GLS 550 and was looking forward to the update but was disappointed to learn MB dropped wireless support (at least for now). They also dropped the ball by only using a portion of the 12.3" screen to display CarPlay (and Android Auto). I've read many of the above comments about the cables and agree 100% that it's a shame you can only use CarPlay if you plug in next to the wireless charger. Some of this looks like an afterthought.

A gaggle of MB's
Well.... there have been reports by the G-Wagen some owners have had good report about this "wireless CarPlay dongle".. I don't have personal experience with this - since I prefer to use cable since I am assured regardless of how long I am in the car - that when I get back out of my MB I will always have more battery charge than when I got in...

Another $200 you can reprogram ECO Start/Stop if you want... this does work well !

I've had a couple of issues with CarPlay. Lately it tells me CarPlay is activated and it has the sideways arrow to push. Nothing happens no matter how many times I push it. But I can say hey Siri and it comes right up. Interesting.

Nice to see that Vladimir put out a 2020 product already, hopefully he will have some other tunes coming up soon. With that said $200+ for that function alone...thanks, I will press the button myself

So got a 2020 GLC loaner and low and behold Mercedes decided to put CarPlay plug inside the center console in this car which costs over half less than my gls580 and not in mine.Just cant see the logic here

Yea, this seems like a screw up to me. I can't imagine they would be worried about saving a few pennies for a shorter USB C wire harness run for data in addition to charging. My only hope would be that they used the same cabling for both ports, which in theory should mean they could enable or swap the port that can be used for CarPlay/Android Auto with a software update. Really dumb to have the charge/data port next to the wireless charging pad since they can never be used together.

I've had the same experience. Also having some difficulty using Siri to get CarPlay to play a specific album from an artist. It will bring up the artist and a playlist, but it won't play a specific album without myusing the touch screen.

2020 owners, for what it's worth (I don't own the dongle) the CarPlay2Air site says it works on MBs 2016 through 2019, but not 2020. Just a word of caution. Might be worth getting a confirmation from the manufacturer that its well operable in newer MB vehicles.

I will quote myself here and remind you guys again that those adapters are not what you want. They all come from the same factory, look at carplay2air and carlinkit etc. they are exactly the same units, read the Amazon reviews...

I confirmed it. Carplay2Air works perfectly on my '18 S560. but my '20 GLS580 doesn't recognize it.

My 2021 AMG GLS 63 only has a single data USB C port in the arm rest compartment.
Has anyone had another added?
I was thinking of asking my Merc garage to add an additional for Carplay/Android Auto.
Anyone know the part number for multiple ports?
Its a plastic housing inside the compartment circled in blue.

You'll also notice by the comb there is a wireless Carplay that I used to us in my AMG GLE 63s from the center console. Worked like a dream, the goal is to use this again.
Makes no sense to have a wireless charger nexto a Carplay/Android Auto port!? If its plugged into it its charging already!
