Cancelled my GLS order

My wife had an order for a brilliant blue 450 but the black plastic molding on the wheel arches bugged us enough to make us cancel today. I’m hoping they will allow you to order the amg appearance package in 2021 like you can everywhere else. Anyone else waiting on the amg appearance package to order?

just paint them, I don't think they are going away until this model gets a refresh (3-4 years)

Yeah, I think the US market has a 0.0001% chance of getting the AMG line on GLS450 anytime soon.

Absolutely, it's a styling cue from a early 90's Chevy pickup. Over time, the plastic will look faded and grey. So disappointed in this design.

In Mercedes history, it goes back to the W163 ML. My '98 was one of the first in the country. At least on that, the plastic was grey and didn't look quite as cheap.

I'm close to cancelling my order as well. But not because of the plastic strip. I'm cancelling because they can't get me a car! Been trying to get on since March of 2019. Spent an hour on the phone with MBUSA on Friday, and took a 2 hour drive to the dealer yesterday, no one knows why the car is stuck at the factory. Entered production on 2/4/2020 after being repeatedly delayed, as of yesterday it's still in production (B4 status) and no one knows why.
Reached out to a few BMW dealers last night after getting back from the MB dealer, they are offering some very attractive deals on the X7 and from order to delivery time of 6 weeks. (Previously ordered X3 for wife, also took 6 weeks)

If I don't hear back from MBUSA by Tuesday, then I'm likely going to cancel my order and order an X7

Well I reached out to MB USA about why we cancelled hopefully others from the other tread about the plastic fenders did the same. I would think there is at least a medium chance they add the amg appearance package in 2021 since you can get it in Canada.

I love my 450. That plastic doesn't bother me a bit.

The good news is there are products that will change back to black when they start turning grey.

What I am not thrilled with is the fact that the 2nd row seats no longer lie flat. It turned out okay but I still don't like it.

Same. All to make 3rd row access easier.

Well heard back from MBUSA this morning. They said they have no visibility into status of production in their own factory. (According to the customer relations manager my case was escalated to). She says to contact the dealer for status. Dealer says they have no info and to contact MBUSA.

So in the end I said to both of them, cancel my order.

Now have a X7 on order with a 6-8 week estimate for delivery. Better equipped than the GLS I had on order and about $5k less plus 3 years of free maintenance. (do sacrifice a little in 3rd row and trunk space compared to GLS)

that is some scary bad customer service. Good luck with your X7 order!

Just got a call from the general manager of the dealership. He said he was contacted by MBUSA. He reached out to the factory. They told him there's a parts shortage on the GLS450 series. They didn't know when it would be back in stock and production would resume.
Basically the car I had on order was pushed back 3 months, then when production finally started, they couldn't complete it due to a parts shortage, so it's sitting on a lot somewhere waiting for parts to complete the build.

I told him the same thing I told the MBUSA rep. and ask that they cancel the order. If they could not secure all the parts to build it after it's been in the production pipeline for 6 months, doesn't look like it will get resolved any time soon.

and I don't have any of the high end options either like EABC or the 3D audio.

by chance did you order the two-tone black/brown leather seats? I know they were not supposed to be available until Mar 2020.

Looks like I drove down the same road with you, with a fork here and there. I took delivery of a 450 that was fully loaded at the end of January but it was missing parts that are still missing over a month later. I also kicked it up the ladder at MBUSA several rungs and got a human being who supervises another human being to respond to my anger but he gave me no encouraging information. I've spent more than a couple of hours explaining my ordering and delivery experience as a first time MB buyer and why I might likely not do it again. Spent a long time giving my thoughts about how and why the business model is flawed. My contact hinted that they would compensate me in some way for the aggravation after the parts come in and there is closure. I now get periodic emails from the guy saying they haven't forgotten about me. BFD. There's something very wrong about their production pipeline and customer service responsiveness. I hope this is a learning experience because I'm not going to be so patient the next time if there is a next time with MB. Good luck.

Sorry to hear that. Luckily I don't have to deal with it anymore as I've cancelled my GLS order(s) and ordered an X7 this past weekend.
BMW gives you 3 ways to track your order without getting the dealer involved. You can track it on their web site, using the automated voice service on their 800# or call the BMW genius line and talk to a human.
I don't know why MB doesn't have any of these tracking capabilities. BMW has had it for well over 5 years (Not sure when they implemented it, but these existed 5 years ago when we ordered my wife's X3).

I painted the plastic portions on my W163, but that was a different material. I believe, with proper prep, it could be done successfully. Consult with a body shop.

Auto industry parts shortages will increase in the short and medium terms because of the Asian health situation and related factory closures.

A possible outcome is an increase in recent model used car values because some people won’t want to or be able to wait for a new vehicle.
