Hard wiring Radar Detector 2020 GLS 580

I am in the process of trying to hard wire a Uniden R3 radar detector in our 2020 GLS 580 and it of course is proving to be a bit of a challenge.

The biggest challenge is finding a fuse that is switched with ignition. There are plenty of fuse box locations, however, I can't seem to find one that is switched on/off in the front fuse boxes. The fuse box for the 12v adapters are all in the very rear of the vehicle. I guess I could run down to the back of the front 12v accessory adapter, however, I would like to avoid this unless necessary. A mirror tap in the overhead console would work, however, I would want the kind that plugs into the harness slot and not one that taps the wire directly for obvious reasons.

I know the Uniden R3 has an auto-off feature which I may have to ultimately resort to.

I haven't seen too much about recent models and hard wiring. Hopefully someone has some insight on this.

Do you have the acoustic comfort package? The glass seems to absorb quite a bit of radar and I am quite conflicted on if I want to go with a windshield mount detector or get an installed detector.

Ahhh I didn't think about this. I did get the package. I can't imagine that the glass stops the radar that much?

There are two defined areas where the windshield coating does not impact reception.

I tested it out and it's a significant reduction. I tested with a Stalker II MDR and the range went from 2200ft when place behind the reception area GregW mentioned down to 500ft when placed behind the non reception area.

Yeah but neither of those are idea.

For the one next to the mirror, it's too far to the right to see the display and mute it. Plus I want to place a dash cam there so that GPS activated parking mode is actuated properly.
For the lower one, it gets way too hot in the summer, very difficult to reach, not easy to hard wire install, theft risk, lower performance, and that's where I will most likely place my EZ Pass since I cant place it higher up...

Wish they still offered the window to the left of the mirror like they used to...

You rock, thanks for sharing this. I put my radars to the right of the overhead console.

Awesome that you tested it out with a Stalker II MDR. Thank you for that. The right of the mirror is my preferred spot and fortunately I have long arms so I can reach it. There is always the option of a remote, however, install can be a pain and unsightly. I guess you might be able to look into a grill mounted system, however, those are pricey too. Can you get your EZ Pass on your front license plate?

Stinks that they don't have a safe area to the left as well.

My next concern is that if I do end up getting pulled over, last thing I want is for the cop to see my reaching over to take the RD down. But that's awesome that you can reach that far. I can't even see the screen on my detector when it's mounted there and it's important for me as I use the frequency info to determine if it's a legitimate threat or not.

Stalker radar is what they use most commonly around here so I tested with that. But I have almost every handheld and installed radar units used in the US as well as all the LIDAR guns. Consequence of being one of the owners of RDForum lol

I think I am going to install Radenso RC-M in the grill, but Radenso is releasing Theia eventually which will be windshield mount. So I still got to figure out what to do.

As for the EZ Pass license plate mount, I live in NYC and I learned that those things are easily damaged by people bump parking. Plus some places try to ticket you for obstructing part of the license plate...

I have my ezpass installed in the upper area, and my max in the lower area. Haven't hardwired the max because I am also waiting on the Theia which @p5657587 mentioned (hello fellow RDF member!).
I like using the mute button on the max cable which I believe you lose with hardwire. Haven't had to take the rd down, I would normally just unplug it when driving through states where rd's are not permitted.
In terms of overheating - had that issue a few times before on my old vehicle. On the MB I like that the AC vents are right underneath the rd so I just turn up the A/C for 30 seconds and it cools off immediately.

Someone on the GLE forum mounted theirs behind the grill and says it works fine.

Some detectors lose their range permanently when you leave the rd in the car in a hot place and the electronics get damaged. Hence why I want it somewhere I can take it down easily.
But hello to a fellow RDF member. I hope you enjoy the forum.

As for the EZ Pass, I'll have to figure it out. But thanks for the suggestion GregW.

@p5657587

RDForum has been so helpful so man times. Thanks for making that site what it is. Wanted to do an AL Priority system, however, they aren't cheap and we keep our cars for 3-4 years.

Crazy about the license plate eztags and being ticketed for them...
