Propane Gas Smell while Driving with window open

Hello all

New to this site - have a new 2020 GLS 450 and ever since I've received it there is a gas smell (not gasoline) but propane like (actually the additive Ethyl Mercaptan) while driving with drivers side or passenger side window open. More pronouncing smell at 50 km/h. It's been to dealer and Mercedes Canada techs contacted. It now has 4600 km on it so that eliminates any smells from undercoating or manufacturer finishes. This smell has everyone stumped and if anyone has any ideas as to what this could possibly be I'm all ears. I know the solution would be to keep the windows closed but I do like my fresh air on occasion.

Do you know where it is coming from?

candidates:

- windshield washer fluid
- engine coolant
- engine exhaust
- new plastic outgassing

no idea but I figured if I could smell it its coming from underhood. The techs had it up on lift and couldn't smell it after driving it for 15 minutes. I bring it into my garage after driving it and can't find the origination of smell and can't smell it when car is stopped and has hood open. Only when driving with one window open does it smell and it's strong enough that my kids notice.

Propane smell

Yes! This is happening with my Gls 450. I took it into the dealer but they said they didn’t smell it. But every time I get in, especially with passengers, we all smell it! Have you figured it out?

there is a service bulletin on this. I had the same issue. It took 3 visits but has something to do with relocating a line near the rear wheels.

Propane smell

The exact same thing happened to me and they bought my brand new Gls 450 back as a lemon in Oct 2020. Does anyone know what causes this to happen? I lost a lot of money on the buy back deal.

as. Said in my previous post: there is a technical service bulletin on this. It has to do with relocating a line over the rear axel. I posted this back in September! My car was in for three visits before they fixed it. I am surprised they missed this as the repair is directly from MB!

Is there a link to the technical report? or wherever the root cause and solution have been discussed?
Thanks.

Hi,
We have the same problem with a new GLE 350 de and quite surprised found out this issue has been logged here as we did a lot of research on the internet.
Could you eventually figure what was the root cause of the issue and how it has been fixed?
Thanks,

Did anyone find the service bulletin reference number for the propane smell?

My dealer in Southampton NY claims that one does not exist.

For sure there is, here in the UK they resolved it by rerouting the cables.

I just wish that was enough info to provide. They claim they don’t smell anything and there are no service bulletins to reference. Had a feeling this was going to be the case when I brought it in.

issue resolved. Rerouted vent tube as described above. Took a visit to another dealership. Southampton, ny Mercedes dealer is terrible. Went to Smithtown and they took time to diagnose and fix instead of dismissing my claim.
