GLS Off Road Ground Clearance

I am looking for info on the 2017 to present GLS. I have two 2016 GL 450s one with the On/Off Road Package and one without. I mention this as a point of reference. I see on the MB website that a "Off Road Package" is offered on the 2020 GLS 580 but not offered on the GLS 450.
  1. Does anyone know which models offer the Off Road Package on the 2017, 2018, and 2019?
  2. Does anyone know the specific details on how the GLS Off Road Package differs from the GL "On/Off Road Package"?
  3. What is the maximum ground clearance with the offroad package?
Thank you.

You prob want the x166 forum for prior year questions.

I don't have questions about the X166.

X167 starts with 2020. I thought your questions were about the previous years. But maybe I don’t understand your question.

To clarify, I am trying to confirm that the Off-Road Package is available on the 2017-2019 GLS 450. It looks to me like it is only available in 2020 on the GLS 580 and no longer on the 450. Also, at some point the "On/Off-Road Package" became the "Off-Road Package" and I am wondering if anything was changed.

According to the Dealer Ordering Guide (DOG) for the ‘20 and ‘21 X167, you can only get Off Road on the 580
I found a DOG for the 19 in the GLS X166 forum and it shows you could get it for 450 and 550. My guess is you could always get on both, that the limitation now has more to do with the model change and manufacturing (and now supply chain) limitations- but just a guess.

But you could research the other years in that forum.
I think my GL ‘14 550 has “on/off road” name - but I don’t know if there’s a difference or if it’s just a name change. I might still have the spec and if so, I can compare them.

@Buck Horn You are asking about the 2017-2019 GLS, correct? The X166 platform covers those years.

2018 the off-road package was available on the GLS. https://www.mbusa.com/en/owners/manuals

2019 the package was available. See the same MBUSA link for manuals.

See the attached facelift description information.

This 2018 has the off-road package. https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/invent...ting=271070716

Option code 430 https://www.lastvin.com/vin/0vwD9Ax9a1Kd4nWYZ

Ground clearance range with off road package: 7.9 inches to 12.0 inches.

Yes after what I have learned here I am no longer interested in the 2020 or 2021 GLS 580 (X167) for off roading. The X176 comes with 21" - 23" wheels which in my opinion make it unsuitable for rocky terrain. I doubt that you could even get 10-ply tires in those sizes.

I don't know what you mean by "my GL ‘14 550 has “on/off road” name"? I have two 2016 450s but I am unfamiliar with all other years.

Thank you for your reply!

Thank you for your research. I just learned that past model brochures are available. It never occurred to me to look!

I am curious how you located those two vehicles. Did you use the option code or keyword search somehow? I am unfamiliar with LastVIN.com.

Very helpful reply!

@Buck Horn Finding vehicles for sale with certain features is somewhat hit or miss. I don't like the Mercedes CPO website, it's clunky and takes alot of time to find what you are looking for (my opinion). Cargurus is what I usually use. Search the vehicle and years you are looking for, then select option you want. At least 50% of the time, the options are incorrectly listed on Cargurus. For example, many GLSs are listed with "off road package" and do not have the Mercedes-Benz Off-Road Engineering Package. So you have to look at the photos of the vehicles to find the second dial and "LOW RANGE" button on the center console, signifying the vehicle has the Off-Road Engineering Package with two speed transfer case and other software features.

For definitive confirmation whether a particular vehicle has Off-Road Engineering Package, it needs to have option code 430 when you decode the VIN on datamb.com

To those owners who "think" they have "off road" something or other: you MUST have two dials/knobs on the center console, and you MUST have a button labeled "LOW RANGE".

If you do not have the second dial and LOW RANGE button, but rather have a Dynamic Select dial and "Off Road" mode, this is the standard 4MATIC + 4ETS system with the standard single speed transfer case. In this situation you do not have Off-Road Engineering Package. Decode your VIN and see if you have option code 430.
