GLS 580 oil grade
From here: https://operatingfluids.mercedes-benz.com/
go to Coolant, here: https://operatingfluids.mercedes-ben...ory/coolant/en
then, standard practice is to look up the fluid specification for the relevant engine, here: 320.1 (link goes to direct .pdf download)
From 320.1, and looking up M176, the specifications 325.6 and 326.6 are given.
Then go here: https://operatingfluids.mercedes-ben...sheet/325.6/en
and here: https://operatingfluids.mercedes-ben...sheet/326.6/en
From 325.6 and 326.6, the information can be found that Zerex G40 is an accceptable product. Zerex G40 can be found at Auto Zone, O'Reilly's or your favorite auto parts stores. Maybe also Walmart and Costco, I don't know because I don't shop there.
In a pinch and finding oneself in need of a small coolant top-up, distilled water is acceptable substitute.

So off to the MB parts counter I went. I asked for 4 quarts of the right oil for the car, and the guy went to his computer and plopped four jugs of 229.5 on the counter. I protested, directing him to the page in my manual calling for the 229.52, and he finally gave me the right stuff.
It shouldn't be this hard to buy oil for a $100K car, and the ordeal makes one wonder how often non-conforming oil is actually used by shops, including the MB dealer!

And that's assuming you know what the engine is called. Since I'm forbidden from using Google I wonder how I was supposed to figure that out.
