GLS580 uses the M176 engine, the mild version of the 4.0L TT V8.

From here: https://operatingfluids.mercedes-benz.com/

go to Coolant, here: https://operatingfluids.mercedes-ben...ory/coolant/en

then, standard practice is to look up the fluid specification for the relevant engine, here: 320.1 (link goes to direct .pdf download)

From 320.1, and looking up M176, the specifications 325.6 and 326.6 are given.

Then go here: https://operatingfluids.mercedes-ben...sheet/325.6/en

and here: https://operatingfluids.mercedes-ben...sheet/326.6/en

From 325.6 and 326.6, the information can be found that Zerex G40 is an accceptable product. Zerex G40 can be found at Auto Zone, O'Reilly's or your favorite auto parts stores. Maybe also Walmart and Costco, I don't know because I don't shop there.

In a pinch and finding oneself in need of a small coolant top-up, distilled water is acceptable substitute.

Sorry just checked for you and Amsoil does not have the recommended oil for GLS580. I can sense some lack of knowledge and experience and my recommendation would be to get MB brand oil from the dealer and change it yourself if you still want to do it. Still going to be a way less expensive service if you are trying to save on the dealer charges.

GLS 450 (2022), EQE SUV 350 (2025). GLS 450 (2007)
What a mess. I bought a 2022 GLS 450 and then went looking for the 229.52 oil (per my manual) in 5W30 (which is the weight my dealer told me was in the engine). I like to carry some extra just in case. This was impossible to buy anywhere online or in local stores. Mobil had a product that matched exactly, but it was apparently not manufactured anymore and was therefore impossible to buy.

So off to the MB parts counter I went. I asked for 4 quarts of the right oil for the car, and the guy went to his computer and plopped four jugs of 229.5 on the counter. I protested, directing him to the page in my manual calling for the 229.52, and he finally gave me the right stuff.

It shouldn't be this hard to buy oil for a $100K car, and the ordeal makes one wonder how often non-conforming oil is actually used by shops, including the MB dealer!

Oh why you didn't say it was so straightforward. An 8-step process with 3 pdfs just to figure out what coolant you need.

And that's assuming you know what the engine is called. Since I'm forbidden from using Google I wonder how I was supposed to figure that out.

I ended up using Amsoil 5W40, 229.51 spec. Don't want to deal with tye dealer. 2022 GLS450 engine. Changed recently mine after another 5k miles and I drained exactly 9 quarts same as what I filled 5k miles ago so no oil burning for that interval.

Judging by this thread the dealers are universally using 229.5 so I assume it can't be that bad. Maybe if you plan on keeping your car for more than a decade it might be worth worrying about. Personally my lease is up next year so I really don't care.

It's part of the MB ownership experience that is included in the price you paid/are paying for the vehicle.
