GLS 580 oil grade

I am getting conflicting answers from the dealer and Mercedes does not state in the manual or on the website for fluid info bevo.mercedes-benz.com what oil grade to use. I have the spec. for my model it is 229.52 or 229.61 but the grade is not specified. Normally the grade depends on the average temps. I like to do an oil change myself before the first A service and buying oil at the dealer to do this is ridiculous. Can anyone give me a source for this information?

Oil company sites are usually a good source. I checked 6 of the major brands and only Valvoline and Liqui Moly (German) even listed the x167 580. Only the Luqui Moly actually provided the MB certifications it complies with. So if you don’t mind the price per quart, that’s the safest bet and I’d guess MB uses a German supplier for its oil, so it may even be OEM. Valvoline claims to comply but the standards they reference I didn’t recognize. None of the other majors list anything for the x167 at this time that I could find.

Yes price is a factor but I won't buy one that does not specify 229.52 or 229.61. What I am looking for is the viscosity grade recommendations for this vehicle ie. 5W30 so if I find the right spec I can also get the correct viscosity grade recommended by Mercedes. I like to do more frequent oil changes than what is provided by doing the scheduled maintenance only. I document any service I do so there will not be any issue with Mercedes claiming the wrong products were used to keep warranty intact.

Both the Valvoline and the Liqui Moly search tools recommended 5W30 full synthetic.

Liqui Moly has the correct spec. but I cannot find any here in Canada. Valvoline does not make MB spec. at least for availability in Canada.

I did find Total - Quartz INEO MC3 5W30 with spec. 229.52 available in Canada at a reasonable price so I am going with that and an OEM filter from the dealer.

When I went to the dealer for the filter they had a deal on for their MB brand 229.52 5W30 @ $14/l (CAN$) and with my MB Canada discount was $12. Easy and my oil change record for warranty is on file, as having purchased the correct oil and filter at the dealer.

Thanks for the link. To get this one to Canada including shipping I am $15.80/l USD or $21 CAN. I went for the Mercedes brand oil 229.52 5W30 for $12CAN or $9 USD approx. At that price from my dealer I may go stock up!

I have 2020 GLS580. I just got Service B done by local dealer yesterday. The dealer used Mobil 1 5W-40 229.5 oil. I checked my manual. GLS580 needs 229.52 or 229.61. I called the dealer and said Mobil 1 is not 229.52 grade but he said the dealer used the oil all the time and it's ok. He told me to call call USA MB customer service if you have question. I called USA MB customer service, they don't have any idea. They just say they stands behind any service done at dealer service. What do you guys think about this?

MB corporate will not throw the dealer under the bus.

Dealers will not admit to mistakes made, if any.

2020 vehicle is under warranty, so no issue if something happens in the short term. Meanwhile, find another dealer who knows what they are doing. That search might take you a while.

229.5 instead of .52

229.5....

Oil itself for lubrication is fine but the 229.52 is a very low ash content for the catalytic converter that mounted right at the engine. Over time a non low ash oil will slowly plug/degrade this particulate filter and cause premature failure.

Same scenario with the Diesels...

This time, I want to do own oil change on 2020 GLS580. I went to local dealer to buy MB 229.52 oils but the part employee said it's for only diesel engine. instead, he told me to buy 229.5 oils for gasoline. The dealer only has MB 229.52 for diesel and MB 229.5 for gasoline. No more Mobil 1. The manual clear says "229.52 or 229.61". Should I buy MB 229.5 as dealer recommended? or get MB 229.52 as Manual says?

I never knew motor oil could be this confusing. Its been a long time since I've had to buy any myself. My readout is on the Min line and I'm going on a road trip so I wanted to get some top off.

I check the manuals expecting to see something like 5W30 instead it gives me a 5 digit number. After a lot of googling I determine this is MB's own spec for oil but its still really hard to find specific info. Just to be safe I overpaid for a case of official MB brand 229.52 oil from amazon.

(I just checked my service logs and my dealer used 229.5)

And then there is the coolant. The manual was no help here at all. After more googling I determined it was color based and I need pink coolant. I found specific recommendations from some manufacturers websites but none of them are in stock anywhere. On Amazon I found PEAK Violet concentrate which says it is for MB 2014 and up. Hopefully it is the right one.

(I don't even bother checking physical stores anymore since they never have what I need and inevitably tell me I should just order it online....)

Don't use Google. Use the Operating Fluids site. https://operatingfluids.mercedes-benz.com/

I would stick with what is in writing - the manual. Unless the dealer want to give you something in writing stating 229,5 is recommended for your model/year. Generally the higher the number the more recent the application is so 229.5 is generally older specification and for older models and 229,52. If the Dealer was telling you to go with a higher number than was stated in the manual I would find it more credible.

Sure it does. Spend some time searching this site, and reading through the https://operatingfluids.mercedes-benz.com/ site. The answers are provided.

I've spent enough time searching. Instead of being so smug maybe you could just spell it out.

What probably you don't understand is that the viscosity is within the spec. 229.52 or 229.61 won't find them in 5W-40 as those two specs need to provide cold temps fuel efficiency and flow of oil and for example 5W40 has spec. 229.51
Stick to the spec 229.52 and 5W30 viscosity for example if that is going to be easier for you.

Yes, I feel like I should follow manual as well. I want to try to use Mutol 5w-30 229.52 at Amazon,
Amazon Amazon
. Did you use 229.52 oil when you did own oil change? if so, everything was ok? Did you use MB brand or any other brand?
I just found 5W-40 at amazon,
Amazon Amazon
.

I just found 5W-40 at amazon, https://www.amazon.com/Motul-8100-X-.../dp/B08NWJXMNY.
I use AMSOIL brand. I switched to Amsoil years ago and when buying oil for the household fleet of a few vehicles it is enough to qualify for the preferred customer program and then it is up to a 25% discount so can easily beat any Amazon pricing. If not certain what to use just give them a call and customer service will direct you to what to buy. It seems what you found on Amazon complies with MB spec but I don't trust them, Amsoil I do otherwise just go and buy MB brand oil. As far as doing your own oil change I don't have issues.
