GLS63 23" Tire Pressure

I had been struggling with tire pressure on the 23's but I now think I found a sweet spot.

We started at 41/39 f/r went to 40/38 and now at 39/37 and I think I like it there. All were very smooth rides but once I got down to my last pressure, the shudder/shock in the chassis going over some bumps has been muted considerably. Much more palatable ride but not soft/mush by any means.

I'm looking forward to an all season 23" performance tire option soon. I figure about another 3-5k miles on my original Michelin Pilot Sport 4S and then I'll go with an all season for wear and noise since I make a cross country trip (2300mi) each summer each way. Anyone hearing anything about what might be coming down the road?

I LOVE the Pilot Sport 4S but reality on this heavy truck they just won't last long.

I’m at 40/39 right now and think it rides pretty well. Dealer had the tires at 47/47 and it was way too firm.

Hi guys, I have the X166 GLS63 and Im always messing on with tyre pressures in an attempt to find that sweet spot. Just has the PS4 SUV fitted to the factory 22’s but i went up from 285 to 295 to try and help get over the rough ride and feeling it was skipping like it lost traction on bad roads.

I notice your settings at higher front than back, its the other way around on the X166, Im at 39/44, its better with the new PS4’s than it was with Pzero’s but its still a bit skittish on bad tarmac and suffers from trim rattles most of the time, new tyres did nothing for that!!

Just wanted to share my frustration

Thanks

Carl

Are there ALL SEASON 23 inch tires?
I thought those did not exist.

Here is my email to and from Michelin last month.

I cannot get Michelins to fit my GLS580 and would like to see if there is a chance you will make All Season or 4 season tires to fit in the future.
285/45R22 front and 325/40R22 rear.

We appreciate the contact information for tire sizes 285/45R22 and 325/40R22 in the new Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 tire. Unfortunately, we do not show any future development in these tire sizes. Please check back with us later this year for possible additional tire sizing!

There are all season tires for the front (not rear) 23” wheels for the GLS580. So unless you get an extra set of front 23” rims for the back there are no all-season options. I’m still hoping they will have an option for the rear before next winter.

I have in my garage a very expensive set of Pirelli 22” winter scorpion tires, which I will use as all season tires once my Yokohama‘s wear out. Hopefully they will make that tire in the 23 inch size soon.

I went 295/40/22 Michelin PS4 SUV instead of 285/40 which is a same size fitment all round on the X166, I love that its just a tiny bit more tire now, looks amazing.

Just no data for that pressure and mine’s always suffered from a bit of shimmy in the steering, its better with new tyres on but not solved. X166 thing I believe.

In my experience with Mercedes air suspensions max tire pressure is best. contrary to what you may expect it smooths the highway ride. Using low tire pressure also puts the megarims to damage from potholes. THis my third merc with airsuspension and I can immediately notice when its a few pounds low because impact harshness increases. Im only theorizing but I think that the suspension is tuned for a "hard" tire. The 63, particularly with 23's is simply rough. The price you pay for mega thrust and bad *** looks.

I would not accept any shimmy - that indicates a problem for sure. Check rims for balance and true. Tires can also flat spot especially softer compounds. My experience with MB air suspension is that the tires need to be perfectly matched to the vehicle. My old GLE factory provided Pirelli's could not be balanced and were replaced 3 times. Pirellli had it for a month trying to determine the problem because Continentals would balance on my car. Pirelli bought me a new set of Continentals and was done with it. I only use MO spec. tires now.

Try P zero Pirelli which I think its better than Michelin in the off-road car

I has Pirelli on when I purchased it a year ago, had shimmy then and have shimmy now with Michelin.

Im starting to convince myself it does it at slow speeds when going over speed reducing humps in the road aswell as at 60mph region, and that sometimes it feels better than other times, then it does it a lot and I get disheartened by it all over again.

Had the Michelin Hunter Road Force balanced recently, the guy was reasonably ok with the machine but no expert, he got 2 within spec, 2 he couldn't despite a couple of tyre rotations on the rims to match balance them. The machine said rim just in spec tyre not, Ive asked Michelin for some support.

Maybe I need to replace lower control arms to tighten up the bushes there, maybe they’re sloppy and its that Im feeling. Mercedes dealer just fitted new rear brakes and said all suspension components are fine but with 60k miles I cant help think it needs new arms, they can be purchased separately but Merc dealer claimed its as costly in labour to do bushes as it is to do the whole arm assembly.

What do you guys think?
