GLS450 Poor Ride Quality

Hey everyone!

I recently took delivery of my 2021 GLS450, and I’m less than happy with the ride quality. I specced the 23 inch wheels with the Pirellis, and I’m noticed a ton of tire noise, and I’m feeling most bumps on the road. My 2016 GLE350d feels better in its ride than this new GLS. Is this expected behavior with 23s or is there possibly something wrong with my specific vehicle?

On a side note, MBUX and Apple CarPlay seem to be really laggy. Anyone else experiencing this too?

Thanks for the advice guys!

I just picked up my 450 a few days ago and it has 21 inch wheels, no problem with ride quality at all. Other than the wheel size, you might consider changing the tire to Michelin’s, as I found Pirelli’s to be pretty noisy on previous cars I’ve owned.

Since you just took delivery, it’s possible your tires are overinflated. I’d check that. Also, if you had certain expectations heading into the driving experience, I could see 23 inchers subverting those.

You put 23" rims on Pirellis and expect a comfortable ride? Does your GLE350d also ride on 23" Pirellis?
My GLS 450 on 21" on 33 psi have been the most comfortable and quiet ride I have ever done on an SUV and I have owned and driven about a dozen SUVs in the past 40 years.

Probably your 23"ers and tire inflation.

23 inch wheels kill the ride quality. Pretty much every reviewer out there has commented on that. The 22's with EABC are perfect. Ride is butter smooth. With 21s EABC must be like riding on a levitated train. I had a A GLE loaner with the regular air suspension and it was very very smooth. However any enthusiastic corner was not confidence inspiring at all. Great highway cruiser, but surprisingly torpid when pushed in harder corners. The GLS with EABC seems like a superathelete in comparison.

23's"? What did you expect? Of course that will affect ride quality.

The 23's particularly the AMG monoblocks are certainly distinctive. IMO they don't look ridiculous on the GLS sizewise. Unfortunately aside from looks they have some very negative issues bad ride, road hazard prone and very limited selection of available tires which are very very expensive.

I have a new GLS 450 with 21” coming tomorrow! I’m open to trading anyone with 23” if anyone’s interested as I’m used to driving on 22”+ rims. Let me know if anyone’s interested

Not quite the same as the GLS580 or GLS63 because the hub assemblies of the GLS450 that are absent the AMG appearance package (all the ones in the USA) are at a different offset which will change the appearance and potentially the fender clearance.

my 580 has 22 with 325 in the rear. It looks exactly like the 63.

Just because the 580 looks like the 63, doesn’t mean that the 450 looks like the 580 or 63.

They all come with the same wheel and tire package. The 450 can also have the AMG appearance package making it look identical to the others. The 3 vehicles are otherwise identical from the outside. The 63 of course comes with more goodies that are optional but even the monoblock rims are available to all 3 models as long you are willing to pay 5k for them.
personally I dont like the monoblocks at all.

After thinking about it more, I think it’s likely that the location of the hub assemblies are at the same location for both the 450 with amg package and the 450 without the amg package (non-US version). I was initially basing it on the fact that the same exact size wheels (i.e., 11” rears) have different offsets depending on whether or not the Amg package is included.(see pic) But in hindsight it’s more likely this is just to push the wheels out to better alight with the wheel arch extensions that come with the AMG package.

The 22 325 look badass from the rear, it looks like its running on pin rollersthose tires are enormously wide. As Ive said before, the 22's with the eABC provide astonishing handling for such a huge brute.
