I slowed down and continued to drive when the red stop engine message popped up but after about 5 seconds that message disappeared. The engine did not die but my air conditioning stopped working. I pulled into a parking lot under a shade tree and switched it off for about five minutes. When I restarted, the engine light remained on but the 48V error message was gone and the air conditioning was working again. I switched off the Eco stop/start and drove about 10 minutes to a restaurant for lunch with no error messages appearing but the engine light still on. After an hour lunch, the car started up as normal and no engine light or error messages. I switched the Eco start/stop off again and drove another 20 minutes across town to a shopping area with no additional errors or malfunctions. The car just passed the 2,000 mile mark, I’ve had it since mid-March.
Just a quick follow up but I took my car to service yesterday. They gave me a loaner and they still have my car as of this afternoon. When I hear something, I’ll update again.

Hello, today I had the same warning as mentioned in earlier posts. The truck would not start. They tried to boost it but hooking up the booster battery made no difference. They lifted the front and put the dollies under, and pulled her out of the garage. That was 3 hours ago. Pretty sure it's the 48v battery issue, but will advise when I find out. Thankfully it happened at home and not on the freeway or a parking lot somewhere!

My new GLE 53 (3,600 miles and 6 weeks old) had the same issue on Sunday. It had to be towed in and I’m waiting for the 48V ordered to show up.

I think two fixes need to happen,

1). Recall on the battery

2) A fix that allows the vehicle to operate in limp mode without the 48v system.

For a vehicle this sophisticated to allow the gasoline engine to just go “paper weigh” over a battery, especially when in motion, is simply unacceptable.

have to be honest - mine is for my wife and kids and lots of I-95 driving back and forth between DC and NC. The thought of it just shutting off like this, is seriously making me reconsider keeping it for long and just go the route of a VW Atlas instead, or the new Jeep 3 row Cherokee. I’ll probably take a bath on it, but I can’t have this happen to us.

This keeps happening, and I think the NTSB needs to get involved.

I’m in Palm Beach County, which dealer did you go to? I’m at MB Palm Beach, so maybe we can compare notes.

I have taken all of my previous cars to MB Palm Beach for service since it’s closest to my home and office, but I bought the new one from MB Delray so I had it towed there in hopes of having some more weight to throw around since I bought it there 6 weeks ago and I didn’t really have a specific Service Advisor at MB Palm Beach anyway.

MB Delray has had it since Sunday (although they were closed). I did just now receive a notification from the MB Connect app stating it had been started and remained unlocked so maybe they are actually starting the work today. Who knows?

I’m new to the area so this is my first experience with any of the local dealers, fingers crossed…..We went to MBPB because it was the closest, in case we ended up stalled out on the roadside.

MBPB is telling me my car needed a software update. Is MB Delray replacing your battery?

Report to Government in every country affected.

There is an active post on this subject on this forum GLE class (V167) > 48v Battery malfunction

I'll know for sure this afternoon. I received a text that my vehicle will be ready at 3p. He has been saying all along that it needed to be replaced and the text this morning said "the battery arrived and the work has started". With that said, he told me Monday that all the reprogramming that is needed after replacing that battery would take around 6 hours and the car was only in the shop a couple hours.

The part number of the replacement battery should be on the worksheet they gave you. I would be interested to know if it is other than Part No. 000-982-68-14, which is the part number on my current battery, as well as on the two previous batteries that failed. I read that this part number had been discontinued several months ago, yet still that's the one they put in my car as recently as this June.

I'll let you know once I pickup my car this afternoon.

I'm holding my breath to see how this issue is going to be resolved in no small part due to the fact that I drive my 2021 E450 wagon from Ohio down to your area (West Palm Beach) every winter. My confidence that the battery will survive the 2,400 mile round trip is not good.

I made a drive last month to see family in KY and IN with about the same mileage you’re about to do and had no trouble at all. I don’t always make the drive, but since the car was new I was looking forward to breaking it in and really getting to know some of the features I didn’t have on my previous 2020 GLE 350. It was by far the most enjoyable time I’ve had making that drive ever. I guess I was just lucky that I didn’t have issues until a couple weeks later and at home.

I got my GLS 580 back from service today. They completed a software update to start with and so far no reoccurrence of the error messages. We’ll see. IF the gremlins strike again, the next step is battery replacement. In the meantime, I’ve decided to keep the Eco start/stop turned off in case all that activity contributed in some way to the drama.

I have actually been doing the same since my last battery replacement, but I have no idea if it has any impact.

My car (GLS580) delivered on Aug 6 2021 with 1200 miles on it refused to start today.
I tried to jump start the car and it did not work.
Called Roadside and they tried said they have to try and jump start it, did not work. They scheduled a tow to the dealer and I delayed the tow to tomorrow with today' being a Sunday and the dealer being closed.
I was counting myself lucky to be able to get one last V8's, but not sure about that now.
Hoping they are able to identify the issue (I assume it is an issue with the 48V system) and resolve it quickly.

Good luck
make sure they bring a dolly to tow it out of your garage if you can’t get it into neutral
The dealer keep the car for a week to get the battery

Assuming Roadside can get it into neutral, this will probably be a two person effort because the gear will revert to park when the car door is open. The person who get it into neutral needs to stay in the car while the the other person winches it onto the flatbed.

Hmmm, not sure if anyone tried it and if it works but perhaps keep the door opened while trying to get it in neutral then close the door once it is and see if it goes back to park (although even after that if you open the door again it will go back to park again, so don't open the door anymore if it is still in neutral)

I don't know either but, on both occasions my MB was taken in on a flatbed, someone stayed inside the car once it was in neutral, while someone else winched it onto the flatbed.

This is not a subject I like being an expert on but unfortunately I had no choice. The real trick both times was getting the car INTO neutral, which wasn't an easy task. The Roadside mechanic just kept moving the shifter back and forth until he hit the jackpot. Another poster pointed out that the mechanic had a charger on the 12 volt when he was trying to get it into neutral, but I don't recall that being the case in my instances.

Sorry to bring those memories back up : (
At least you won't have to deal with this anymore so that's good : )

Roadside attached the front tow hook and the car went easily into Neural and he was able to load it up the truck without problems.
Called the Front Service desk said no loaners till Nov 2nd, however my sales guy was able to arrange one.
Drove in the pickup to the dealership and have a GLB now.
While talking to the service advisor, he said they have seen a few of these and if it is 48V, then it will take a day to order it as there is some special order process to get a new battery.
Will update once I know more.
