I was at my dealership earlier this week, which is also next to Audi, Porsche, and several others (a car dealership park area). Lots are bare folks, especially the German brands. BMW had a few more than the other, but not by much. Porsche was totally empty, MB didn’t even have enough new ones to fill the showroom floor and therefore had a coupe of used older gle in there. 0% GLS’s and GLE’s. In fact in the “G” category, only one GLC. Even the bare bones GLB models were used ones.

Ford dealer - only 15 new deliveries to them since June.

Jeep - less than 10 since July.

Porsche - 0 since July.

I’m in the DC area, a major sales market.

Used market? In 2017 I was considering trading my beloved 2015 VW GTI for a new T’reg as they were cutting them out from the US market. Car is fully loaded “Autobahn” model. Paid around $35k for it new from this same dealerships. In 2017 they offers me $12,500 for it as a trade with just 30k miles, in flawless condition (not modified or screwed with, 100% adult owned and maintained beyond spec). I laughed and instead bought my current 2014 W212 as a CPO with 22k miles for $32k, roughing 50% off msrp (local lease return).

fiddling with the idea of replacing the GTI this week for a used Jeep Wrangler Unlimited as our new “toy”. Have been offered nearly $18k for the GTI, which now has 64k miles, needs new tires, carbon clean up, and general tip-tail service, A 6 year old VW…

ill believe the $2b fine from Germany gets paid when I see it. I seriously doubt the German government is going to attempt to hamper the success of Mercedes Benz. Germany’s main contribution to the global economy and national pride is basically just their cars. My opinion only, that fine is as worthless as the paper it’s written on, all for show, and likely 10x’s that in tax incentives issued to them from the government to help spur more emissions friendly engine designs in general. When it comes to government - there are always two sets of books!
The $2B is a US fine.

I have an order in for GLS580 with E-Active body control and executive seating. Do you know if I would be able to get these options if the car is downgraded to a GLS450?

Correct. The days of you getting the vehicle you want the way you want it are diminishing.

Global auto production estimated to be down this year over 6 million vehicles due to the chip shortage. The industry will lose over $100B in sales. Tens of thousands of workers have been moved to part-time or furloughed. Believe me, this is not something any manufacturer is doing on purpose or to hit fuel mileage/emissions targets. I doubt the problem is even the V8 engine. The V8 vehicles are the ones that are most loaded in terms of other features like ABC that also require a bunch of chips. Once chip production catches up, MB will happily return the V8 and AMG models across all their product lines, as those are the most profitable.

So does this hopefully mean that this is only temporarily suspended for the model year and may resume later in the year or basically canceled for the whole model year?

The press release referenced above says canceled for the 2022 model year. Looks like the next hope would be a 2023 model.

Not knocking the 580 V8 as I’m sure it’s an amazing engine, but I have to admit, this 450 straight 6 with the 48v and turbo influence has to be the most impressive 6 cylinder engine I’ve ever owned, without question. Is the GLS 450 a rocket sled? No. But is it deceptively fast, sound great and smooth as butter? You bet. I’m more than pleased with it.

full disclaimer - i was never in a financial position to consider a 580. in fact, i was looking at a gle53 when it dawned upon me that i could get a gls450 for the same price, or maybe less. 3.5 months and 6600 miles later, i don't think i could be much happier with my purchase. i wouldn't mind a bit more pickup and a bit more oomph for highway passing, but there's not much the 450 lacks (put me behind the wheel of a 580 and my tune would prob change a bit). at the end of the day, it's a family hauler. when the wife and kid are in the car, i drive like a sensible/responsible human being. when they're not, i get a little more spirited. all in all, it's been a pretty great all around car. for those of you who are 580 or bust tho, i get it, and i hope you get yours soon!

The 6 is a fabulous engine. The v8 is simply more of very good thing. Is it necessary of course not, but these are lux cars, excess is the whole idea🤣

Obsidian

Optional Rear Spoiler - Much Needed IMO.

Metal Weave Trim closeup for others that are considering. It is phenomenal with a dark interior. It was this or Designo Flamed Ash Wood for me.

Thanks for the kind remarks. So far we do love it. Been a long time BMW supporter and patron but needed something different. Never once had an issue with any of our BMWs, solid as tanks as fast as **** so I hope that trend continues with MB. Had all the usual Escalades and Navigators too and while they dominate in interior space they lack quite a bit of refinement and driving dynamics. I almost ordered an X7 M50 after a test drive and that monster is much quicker and handles better... but if you prefer overall ride comfort and need a bit larger interior than an X7 the GLS is the way to go. Alas, I am getting older. I stewed quite a bit about BMW vs. MB but the GLS won out. I do not believe photos do this car justice, in person it is much sportier and defined than it portrays on YouTube or photo boards. I hope I can order another V8 MB someday as I am not a PHEV, EV, Electrification fan at all...it's rubbish and don't want it forced down my throat by a govt. when we have proven, safe, economical resources at our disposal and readily available in the this country for centuries.

On a side note and more on point with this thread the day we picked it up the GM of the dealer believes that MY22 will be a short year for the V8 machines and MY23 will launch earlier for the V8s or so he has heard.."they simply ran out of V8s" and plan to have them back in MY23...Let's all hope so or at least I do.
