50K Deposit on 2022 GLS 580?

Hey guys, I'm a newbie here and what prompted me to sign up was this somewhat ridiculous interaction I had (at least for me) with a dealer in Oklahoma City. They have allocations for a GLS 580 and I asked how much to reserve. The rep told me to reserve the car, it would be a 50k deposit and a 25k markup. The markup I understand, but I was taken aback by the deposit. What if I wanted to lease the car? Or if financing it, what if I wanted to put down only 10-20% of the total price, which I assume could be anywhere from 120-140k. Anyways, I just wanted to verify here if the deposits for GLS 580s are this high, or if the dealer or the rep just did not want to sell the allocation to me.

That's a crazy amount. I have a GLS63 on order and placed a deposit of $1K. I have never heard of a $50K deposit. We live in crazy times.

No more MB:(
Run from that place. Borderline abuse. 1K max for deposit. As for the markup, I think we are in the midst of a major shift. I'd wait.

No one ask for such kind of deposit. I have recently bought by 2022 GLS from Mercedes Benz of Fort Washington in PA. They didn't ask for any market adjustment and honoring the manufacturer rebate of 1K. The only deposit I had to do was 1K and received my GLS in 3 months.

No deposit and paid MSRP. I would shop around.

C450, GLS 63 and a few other things
Keep in mind the OP is looking at a 580 which is a rare bird at the moment. The $50k deposit is still completely ridiculous and the markup probably is as well, but it won't be quite as easy as a 450 -- at least today. Sam9187's experience is very relevant though.

Thanks so much for the responses guys! I was just totally taken aback by this and it really discouraged me---i.e., that maybe I'm just priced out of the market right now if I'm not able to provide a 50k wire transfer up front. I agree that I'll try to find another place. And although I'd like to get a 580 at the earliest available time, it's also not needed right now, so maybe I'll wait and see how the market changes.

The market is starting to shift. Vehicle manufacturers are starting to get loads of chips now so we will see how this impacts the market. Supply is going to increase, inflation is going up and loan rates are going with them....soon enough those who spent thousands above MSRP may be in for a rude awakening. Patience is key right now.

This. I'm curious to see how bad the "underwater" will in fact be. So many people that paid tens of thousands over will be hit hard. Some might not care, but many that went with high loan ratios will be buried for years.

$1000 deposit here and roughly 5% under MSRP on a custom order. Times have changed but please run from that dealer. GLS 580.

I have bought many MB cars including a G63 and have never been asked to pay a deposit over $1K. I understand GLS580 is "rare" and that's because MBUSA had stopped production for around 6 months but the production is starting and a GLS580 won't be hard to get. There were plenty to choose from before the production halt and will be so again. It's crazy for a dealer to ask for a $50K deposit and even crazier for someone to consider giving that deposit to a dealership. These are times where the dealership may have an upper hand but that is changing.

Double this. Demand destruction is in full swing and I think invoice pricing will be here soon. Used car market will be balanced as well. If you don’t need a $70k+ suv at this moment, you’d be greatly rewarded by waiting for a few months

When I bought my S-class last summer, the dealer had roughly 40 new vehicle inventory on their website. Right now they have around 100.

Would you mind sharing which dealer you did business with? I am also in Chicago area. Were you a repeat customer?

I used a broker. VERY good experience. He did all the leg work and negotiations, saved me $10k on a custom order. This is the second time I've used him, he does all brands and gets rock bottom pricing. I think he works primarily in the Midwest/Chicago.

Never ever heard that much deposit on a vehicle. 25k is way too much as well, I saw one last month in the bay area when I went in for service, black on black 580. $12k added.
