Hello, can someone check their 2020+ GLS 450 to see if the engine make this ticking noise? I saw someone posted a question about valve lifting noise. this sound comes from the driver side of the engine. It changes frequency of the ticking along with engine speed. If this is valve lift, I would have expected the sound from top valve cover. attached is a video with sound. I am over 50K miles, out of warranty... thanks..

Mine has ticked since day 1 (its a 2020 as well). Never been a problem and just figured a noisy injector. Direct injection engines are famous for it.
try a can or two (not at the same time however) of some injector cleaner with a tank of gas and see if that helps. Its helped me many times with not only this mercedes, but my other one too that is 9 years old, and my VW 2.0t that was also DI.
No. It stays on. If I rev the engine, the ticking goes faster. There is little bit of delay between engine rev going up and the ticking sound speeding up..
them I thought, could it be the turbo? Since turbos got a lag. But the turbo is on the other side of the engine.

Seriously, before going down the rabbit hole of wondering what's wrong with my Mercedes and will I have to sell my kids to pay for it, just toss a can of fuel system cleaner in the tank for a couple of tanks and see what that does. You've got 50k on the engine (I've got 60k now myself). I buy the Lucas cleaner in bulk off Amazon with the PEA cleaner and have been running a bottle through my engines about once every 10k miles or so, and when the seasons change to clear out any condensation in the tank lining as well. Been doing that for years on all of my cars. After a while I can tell when one needs it by the ticking noise. Guess it lubricates the injectors or whatever. I don't really know, other than to say that it absolutely helps the engine run smoother. I've had many of these new directions injection engines over the last decade. At first they sounded like lawn mowers with their loud injectors and high pressure fuel pumps banging away (nothing though is worse than a 4 banger BMW in that regard). They've gotten much better over the years, with my last VW (2015) 2.0t being the best so far in the tick tick tick category. My 2014 E350 ticks like a drunk sowing machine, but runs like a champ.
I presume you run the premium fuel only through the car as well.
At 50k, you're also likely due for some new plugs if memory serves correct. Mine is getting new plugs later this week as part of a big service I am having done. Replacing all fluids and gear oil from the rear diff to the windshield wiper fluid. New wipers, new filters all around, new plugs, and jamming a can of Kool-It HVAC condenser cleaner up the drain tube to wash out the mold from the evaporator coil (stinky sock syndrome). Going to cost me around $2k at the indy. But hey, it ain't a Corolla, and knew that from the beginning...
Thanks for all the replies. Several things to try.. Here is what I found from digging around the engine bay looking for source of sound. Seems the sound is coming from the purge valve (part number A0004703700). If I disconnect the signal plug to this, noise stops. Took out the purge valve, and tested resistance (20 ohms), and bench tested with 12v power supply. The valve works as intended (opens with power ON, closes with power OFF). I can replace this with new parts to see if the noise go away. I tested the signal wire for voltage, it seems around 11.7 volts on my voltmeter. I really need an oscilloscope to tell what signal is sent to the valve. Any case, why would the car send ON/OFF signals like that noise interval to this valve? I thought it supposed to only open or periodically. Any thoughts?
Got an update.. I replaced the clicking evap purge valve I mentioned in the post earlier. got a new one from online MB parts dealer. no more clicking can be heard. If I touch the valve, I can feel its opening and closing inside. So, for now, engine is quiet again..

One year later, still resolved, no more clicking after replacing the evap purge valve? Thx!
Yup, mine does that. I googled and youtube'd it and found out it appears to be something called an EVAP purge valve, which looked pretty easy to replace.
I took my car in for service yesterday and asked them to look into it and fix it. Let's see if they fix/replace it or pretend it is normal. The car did NOT sound like that when we bought it. That tells me it is not normal, I'm not sure it is a defect or an actual problem/malfunction, but the car sounds like a diesel.

That's what they first thought on our E53. Different motor but I expect that they all use the same emission parts. They wound up replacing the cams, rocker arms and high pressure fuel pump. Oh, and also the CPU and wiring harness for good measure. Around $10k all in I figure, thank goodness for ELWs.
I have the same issue on my 2020 X167 at 78K. When moving, it stops on any open throttle position only to start again at no throttle. Interestingly, the same issue popped up on my 17 X166 but not till a 190k.
