Like you said though, a 3rd party indie inspection is definitely the best thing you can do with any used or CPO purchase.
It's just a game of numbers for the dealership. Less they have to put into it, the more they get to take out of it. Knowing 99% of the buyers are likely judging the car by the appearance of the interior and exterior to determine condition, that's all they really focus on. The CPO is not a "reset" back to new status by any means. They wouldn't change the transmission fluid on a CPO with 59,750 miles because the manual calls for it to be changed at 60,000. If it's not off the shelf, it's not getting fixed and not disclosed. Personally, I don't care about CPO status anymore. Whatever car I buy, I immediately spend the weekend clay barring the paint with a full detail, even when it's brand spankin' new.

If an experienced Indi says it's ok, and likes the car in general for being relatively trouble free, I am ok with buying it without the extended warranty. End of the day, if you're buying a MB, you do so with the expectation (and not fear) that you will spend a grand or two a year to keep it in tip top shape...the trade off is you can have a nice car for a decade or two. As I told my shop this last time on a $2,500 bill, that I don't see the wisdom in fixing a $2,500 problem with a $65,000 solution. Which is exactly what landed us on the GLS. I told my wife that she can pick whatever car she wants, but to make sure she will still love it when we have a $5,000 repair bill in year 6 of ownership and we fix it instead of replacing it. At my age, I am tired of buying new cars every few years. I want cars that are substantial from the start, and if one of the 10,000 parts goes bad while heading to 250,000 miles, you replace the part, not the car. Granted, that theory has a limit. If I'm hit with a $15k transmission, then bye bye car. Our previous car (2013 Highlander) was excellent. In 2020 at 135,000 miles, it was facing about $4,500 in repairs/service needs. I would have done it too, had it not been critically damaged a couple of years earlier by a mess up at Mr. Tire that ultimately accelerated the wear factor of the front driveline and differential, in addition to my wife "liking" but not "loving" the car. She loves her GLS, and although not one to ever admit to having an ego and certainly does not project to have one, I know for a fact, that she feels pretty special when she pulls up to the soccer mom events in her midnight blue Mercedes Benz. That, is worth all the tea in China for me, and I make no apologies for it. It sits just fine in that parking lot of Land Rovers, BMW's, Navigator's, and so on that come with where we live.

When we were shopping for the GLS, I initially wanted the previous style in the 550 configuration, but could not find one that wasn't 50k+ on the clock. But I really loved that squared off design with the AMG appearance features. Probably my favorite style of all of them. Also realized my wife and kids will be using it the most, so new was the only avenue to take in that regard.
Just like in our Lexus days, their CPO program is basically BS too. Personally I wouldn't let it being certified or not be my deciding factor
