Undercoating Protection Recommended?

I am about to enter the first Canadian winter with my 2023 GLS 450. I have been recommended by friend to get a rubberized undercoating that will protect the bottom of the car from all the salt and grime that will no doubt built up from driving on snow on city roads. I was not aware that this was a thing but I have found several shops that provide this coating service here and have found one that does 3M rubberized undercoating.

I am wondering if others have used something like this and would recommend it or not.

Your friend generally talks, and I bet your friend does not know what the GLS looks like underneath. Mostly, it is covered with plastic panels. I probably can see a benefit in removing those panels and spraying, but the GLS doesn't have a whole lot of exposed body underneath. It is primarily the giant heatshield that is exposed of the exhaust system.

Grew up in the midwest- just south of Chicago. My Dad always had his cars undercoated. Not so much down here in Texas.

I drive in salt all winter and have never had an issue with anything on a modern car rusting. Seem like a service for people who worry too much.

Cars in Northern climates where they must use a large amount of road salt, rusting was a thing years ago. Modern car manufacturing has made rust much less of a concern. I no longer get my cars 'rustproofed'.

I have never opted for aftermarket offerings with words like: sealant, protection, weatherproof, coating, armor, etc., as I believe they are not necessary, given how well modern automotive painting/coating is done at the factory. Furthermore, I would worry that who-knows-who with the spray gun shooting who-knows-what onto my underbody could inadvertently plug up an intentional drain hole or otherwise gum up the works of something important. Just my $0.02
