wow, that is great news... the guy I work with who got the 450 and not the tax rebate should be really excited that some guy in the internet knows more than his lawyers his accountant and the Mercedes dealership who all took an *** reaming over the fact that the 450 does not qualify. Plus, he really loves it when I remind him of this

Section 179 is not a credit or rebate. It allows additional depreciation deductions in the year the asset is purchased. In relation to vehicles/GLS, the vehicle must be used more than 50% for business purposes, and the maximum 179 deduction for a vehicle like the GLS was $28,900 for 2023. You would get to depreciate the balance of the purchase price.

In my case, since I use my GLS for business, but not more than 50% of the use, it is better for me to use the standard mileage rate ($.67/mile in 2024) for the business miles I use the GLS.

Yes, Grant Cardone does it all the time and shared his Section 179 tips here:
https://ca.finance.yahoo.com/news/gr...103200301.html

You still didn't share where you got your list from so not very helpful! It incorrectly lists the GLS580 at 6768 lb when it has been 7485 lb since MY20!

(look for GVWR)

Looks like his friend was fighting the wrong battle (rebate vs tax deduction). Time to get a new accountant and/or lawyer!

I dont care what the "term" is...the 450 did NOT qualify for a surgeon I work with. Period. Even MB (South Orlando) agreed (after the fact) that he should have got the 580....internet theory and internet experts dont matter. The fact is that his purchase of a 2022 did NOT qualify for the deduction as the vehicle did not meet the requirements. Only reason I even know is that being in my car is what made him buy his new car (over his former Discovery).

This is the internet - when Al Gore invented the internet he did not take note that all of a sudden everyone would be omniscient...oh well, time to head to the clinic and pretend like I work for a living....

Yes it does qualify lol. Have you ever deducted a vehicle for business use? It doesn't "qualify" or "not qualify" you just do it and if they audit you you need to substantiate it. There is no list of vehicles from which you select what you bought. Your friend needs a new accountant, ANY multi-use vehicle qualifies. My wife's Pacifica minivan qualifies. As others have said there is no rebate, it just goes into your return as business property that has bonus depreciation that can be written off in the first year.

Hell, my S Class is over 6,000 lbs GVWR and my accountant told me he would deduct it as a 179 because the IRS does not have the ability to go and look at the make and model of every vehicle. I didn't do that because it doesn't qualify (has to be a mixed use vehicle as per the IRS code) and I leased it anyways which negates the 179 deduction.

This "guy on the internet" is just somebody who owns three businesses and has been deducting vehicles from them under Section 179 for years and years and files 5 tax returns a year but what do I know lol. These are expensive vehicles, there are business owners and high earners here who know what they are talking about...

Your friend's 450 likely does not qualify because it is not used more than 50% for business. As a surgeon, commuting to/from home to his first stop (hospital or office), and home from his last stop is not considered business use. He likely uses the mileage rate as I do for travels between office and hospital, etc.

Seriously, there are so many holes in that usage story that it's no wonder the lawyer lost the case!

One important observation I made coming out of the Pandemic: it's really hard to find good help these days!

95% of the vehicles deducted don’t actually qualify based on use.

@SW20S I normally see you on the W222 forum, but happened to be looking over here today! We have both an S450 and a GLS450, I would not replace my S with a GLS, and if I were to buy another GLS, I would probably look at a 580, I like the massaging seats in the S, and they are standard in the GLS580 (last time I looked). My wife and I recently got back from a 1,500 mile trip, and we took the S Class, it's easier to drive, and more comfortable, that isn't to say that the GLS isn't easy to drive and comfortable, it's just that the S is more so. We actually took the GLS to Asheville and back this morning (6 hour trip) to pick up the kids from camp, and we had a great run and I used the Drivers Assistance, just as I do in the S Class. One big thing is luggage space, the S Class is much smaller than one would expect for such a big car, where as the GLS is just huge. I have actually looked at getting the GLS580 from time to time but I just don't want to take the hit on a perfectly good GLS450. We've had it from new, 2022, and have really had no issues with it, I hear stories of 48v system issue, but so far (knock on wood) we haven't had any such problems. Why was I on the X167 forum, because the rear cup holders suck! One regular size and one mini (a tub of Mentos gum fits great), anyone got a fix for this?

Oh, one more thing, CarPlay doesn't fill the whole screen like it does in a W222!

Awesome, an internet pissing contest. Yeah, we own seven different medical facilities and currently employed just over 200 staff members. Oddly enough, we did use the tax credit on the GLS. One of the surgeons I work with quite simply could not use that program with his GLS 450 because the car did not weigh enough. That is a fact that is the end of the story no matter what b******* you want to concoct

Here's my opinion:

It's impossible to compare tax situations between two individuals without knowing every detail about each individual.

Therefore, I have no opinion.

Its not a pissing contest, you are just wrong. The 179 accelerated depreciation is available to any business owners who deducts a vehicle for business and purchases a multipurpose vehicle (truck, SUV, van) with a GVWR of over 6,000 lbs. Period. Again it is not a tax credit. You can just deduct additional depreciation in the first year. Go ask some accountants. GLS450 and GLS580 are both over 6,000 lbs GVWR and multipurpose vehicles so both quality, as do many other smaller SUVs (GLEs also qualify).

Yeah once I got my S Class back I came to the same conclusion, the GLS is a nice addition to the S but not a replacement. If I needed the space or capability it would be different.

Carplay does fill the screen on the refresh GLS! Not the pre-refresh.
