Winter Driving

New to this forum and new 2024 GLS 580 owner. Is there any need to switch to "off road" mode to drive in snow (not deep)? To my knowledge
"off road" mode only increases vehicle height and doesn't alter the all wheel drive (accurate??). Thx

No, you don't need to do anything, in particular, to drive in snow - other than change the tires - the standard fit summer tires are AWFUL in snow - like you won't believe how bad they are - like trying to drive on wet glass.

Awful and absolutely dangerous to use summer tires in winter weather.

Comfort and Eco mode work just fine in snowy conditions.

I hope this doesn't turn into another thread where owners try to defy the laws of physics (grip)!

Summer/Performance tires lose road holding capability below ~45°F (7°C). Change out those tires if your area's temps get below that!

If you don't have snow tires, get a set ASAP, or at the very least a set of 3MPSF rated all season tires. Winter traction is all about rubber and tread design, and all the sophisticated traction control tech that's ever been dreamed up can't change that.

Those have been a Go To tire for year round use for a while. Unfortunately they aren't available in most GLE/GLS sizes.
Conti has a new line of similarly focused tires that are outperform the CrossClimates in most conditions. Tyrereviews.com has done some extensive comparisons recently.
Tire companies are making giant steps with new generation offerings.
I like Nokian's GWRS4 All Weather (not all season) tires as well.

CC2s are an example of a great all season 3MPSF tire. I have them on my X7 year round.

I got the (Snow) driving mode unlocked. The car has that already as a factory option/feature, but it's not available from factory (at least not for US cars).
Get with ( @EleBest ), a sponsor forum vendor here, and ask him to code for you (Snow mode). That's what I did. We had 0.5" of snow last week, but am yet to try it in snow or slippery mode but certainly will be using Snow mode mostly all winter. It will be an added mode just like you have Sport, Comfort, Eco, Individual.... .After coding, you will see Snow or Slippery mode.

Update

I appreciate all the responses... To update; I removed the 23" and purchased a set of 22" wheels which allowed for
many tire options... Landed on Pirelli Scorpion tires.

Any updates on snow mode now that we are nearly halfway through winter?

We were out for a vacation the entire month of December. Yesterday was literally the first day we got a chance to drive the GLS in snow. The throttle response in snow mode is just perfect. The EPS seems to be working so well and preventing the car from sliding prematurely. The brake feeling on icy/slippery roads is different in snow mode than comfort, and it's very obvious. Overall, the snow mode that was coded does it's job exactly as it should.

The good thing is that the car doesn't feel under-powered when trying to pull forward unless the road is truly slippery. It seems to be doing more than just an eco-like mode. I highly recommend it. Note that you can also ask Elebest to adjust where the snow mode sets in the drive mode menu (1st, 2nd ,3rd, etc). I asked him to code mine to Individual as default and to be #2, and then to place the snow mode right above individual (#1), this way just one touch to the drive mode dial will take me from Individual to snow immediately, instead of navigating through multiple modes up or down.

@S_W222 That's a really good description of the Slippery mode.
It's different from ABS-driven traction control.
The power is still there, but it just treats the roads like they're slippery!
Both in acceleration and braking.

By the way, the slippery mode and snow mode are exactly the same. In AMG cars (or AMG theme), it appears as (Slippery Mode). In regular GLS 450/580 it appears as (Snow mode).
The reason I know that is because when I asked Elebest to code AMG theme for me, the snow mode changed to slippery mode with AMG GLS in the theme. I didn't like the AMG theme, and when switched back to regular, the drive mode was re-labaled as (Snow) mode.

Question: Is slippery mode comes pre-coded from factory on AMG cars? I know the non-AMG ones don't have them and hence why I needed mine to be coded to enable it; but am curious how do you know about the Slippery mode?

Yes.
And Trail, which also gives more ground clearance and slightly reduced input response. Not as gentle as Slippery, though.
And Sand, which is like Trail but with increased input response - and open exhaust.

I think Trail is like my 164 and 166's "Off Road" mode.

My 164 "Off Road" mode did a lot of work in the Rockies.
Stellar off road
The 164 was Stellar off road. Steel springs. Street tires.
Embarrassed Jeep Clubs. Fun.

The 166 was more like the S.S. Minnow.

Thread drift.
P.S. that was a rare moment that I used Stickers on a car. Our local Benz Club had an annual off-road weekend, and there was a sticker store in Ouray. I got caught up in the moment.
