2018 GLS63 - 55K Miles - Extended Warranty Necessary?

Looking for advise on plunging into the extended warranty rabbit hole for my ‘new’ 2018 gls 63 with 55k miles, carfax history is clean for the most part except initial fuse replacement issues/Engine/powertrain computer/module reprogrammed/Rear crankshaft oil seal replaced and brake pads replacement every ~8K miles, otherwise drives and sounds good.

A little apprehensive on some of the issues with turbocharger/engine failures reported in the forum, do you guys recommend an extended warranty for a vehicle with this sorta profile ? If yes, would this be an engine or drivetrain one ? Thanks 🙏

An Extended Warranty or Service Policy would be based on your personal risk tolerance. I have them on both of my "this century" cars.

You are in the post 2020, X167 forum. You might get better feedback from the 166 forum, 2019 and earlier.

Bore scoring and oil in the wiring harness are the main items for the M157.

If you decide on extended warranty, look at Fidelity Platinum. It is one where everything is covered except...... I had one on my 15 S550 and very satisfied.

Just generally speaking, if you are considering any type of aftermarket warranty product you should make your decision in conjunction with your preferred repair facility. You don't want to get into a situation where you spend a bunch of money on a warranty only to find out when you need to use it that the place you want to take it to won't honor it.

I have a shop I use and love for my CLS which is now out of warranty and I was considering this like you are now, and I asked them straight up what they thought and they flat out told me that most of them are garbage and several of them they won't even deal with because the process is so ridiculous that they would rather turn away business instead of going through the hassle of trying to get a claim authorized.

I'm not saying they are all bad or useless but you definitely need to take your preferred repair facilities into account when considering this. At the end of the day, these are all independent businesses and nobody can force them to honor an aftermarket warranty product if they don't want to.

How about the X167 inline-6? Any known or repeatable issues?

Ignore the M157 comments - unless you're buying a used car. It's a discontinued engine.

You can shop around different dealers for the same warranty. They all don't charge the same. CallJeff Jackson at Louisville MB for best price.

I believe Jeff can only extended warranty coverage only on vehicles already under factory warranty coverage. For anyone who does not qualify, they can reach out to me below for extended warranty information from our providers Fidelity and Freedom Warranty.

Wiring harness falling apart due to overheating (ongoing)
Turbo wastegate failure (ongoing but very rare)
48V shorting / malfunction (solved)
Generally the electronics will fall apart fast (my mom's GLS already has a daytime light out at 80k)
Otherwise engine is proving to be reliable, use 5w-40 oil since consensus is oil solenoid cannot be dealt with, do 5k oil change intervals

Love this engine, i have TWO!
