Yup, it seems like it, I understand the V167 and X167 had some sort of transmission recall that might had solved things.

The TSB is specific to the S-Class with V8 and 9G with ISG. The TSB says "BR223 with M176 engine and 725.1 (NAG3 Mopf) trans-
mission with ISA2"
It's worth having that TSB if you have that car and that engine, if you have the hard 3->4 upshift.

Thanks for that link (that you posted in another thread). I learned about how engine internals can communicate with the transmission. In this case it looks like the VVT apparatus sends messages to both the cam and the tranny, maybe to anticipate shifts and provided fill power, or to rev-match on downshifts. (My guess from the text.)

I was just saying that I like older cars because they're easy to work on and they respond when you do it. For better or worse.
None of these CanBus camshafts talking to transmission brains.
I misstated- it's Points and Condenser Preservation Society, PCPS.
I was active in MBCA, but not now. Their annual Star Trails event, Four-Wheeling around Ouray, Colorado, was a great way to learn the off-road capabilities of our SUVs. Which is really pretty amazing.
