Love the Goats... not a fan of the judge and the pre LS2 GTOs. My step dad owns a 65 GTO, first year of a true GTO. We are looking to drop in either a 427 or a 454 in to her belly because she just aint quick enough.

Do you remember (or are you old enough to know) the 1975 450SEL 6.9? Can you tell me a faster 4-dr, 5-pax sedan back in 1975? There were FEW cars faster period, and they were all high end sports cars.
Yes I am old enough to remember

I definatly remember the great 450 6,9. You also had a simular 6,3 ltr version. Our nabour at that time had one.... It looked great.

I even remember the topspeed that Auto Motor & Sport tested it to have. It was app 232 kph.
At that time no limo could match that, not even some of the De Tomaso, BMW, Jags or any US car could match that.

But after that single "muscle" car it took many years until they where back in the driver seat.
But I just wanted to joke with you a bit, and the fact that a MB driving taxi driver would tell you that MB is the King of the Autobahn is not excactly supprising, is it.

If you go back a few years, almost every single taxi in Germany was a MB. The reasson was their quality, duration and comfort. German engineering at its best.

BTW: Some of the classic fights.....

3.0 si vs 450SE
745i vs 500SE
750i vs 560 SE
750i vs S600 NA
760i vs S600 V8K

BMW is Great.. I don't say otherwise... but it's only as of recently that people dare compare BMW and MB on the same footing... for that matter Audi.. I used to be understood that MB was King.. they're loosing some market share to BMW and Audi, even Lexus.. but that's just because the other 3 are making much better cars now.. and MB is sort of standing still.. they need to continue their innovative R&D.

We are risking a huge OT discussion here, but I take the chance.

Quality wise MB has had a history of beeing the best. MB meant quality, as in did not break down.

The fight BMW and MB has lasted a looong time. BMW was the cheaper more sportive and in most cases and classes the faster alternative.

I have read german test since I could read my first word in German and even before that where I only could read numbers, where MB and BMW has fought for 1 place.
MB has won on comfort, BMW has won the driving part of it.
Take the 3.0 si( IMO one of the best cars BMW ever made) vs the normal 450SE, BMW the fastest and with handling like a much smaller sportscar, MB large luxurious and comfortable.
The 6.9 was in a class of its own at a price that was scary.

When BMW entered the first 7 series (E23) they closed the gap a bit on comfort at the expense of speed and handling. Still MB won the most fights.
Then the E38 came and the table turned, suddenly most mags meant the Bimmer was more comfortable and the drivability was superior to the S klass, same thing happend in the smaller 5 vs E klass series when the E39 came and beat the E klass in just about every single test on the comfort departement.
Basically BMW went after the part where MB had always been best and MB startet to move into the area where BMW had been superior.

Personallly I have always loved the sportive part of BMW and would not mind that BMW keept the sportive aspect even more prioriticed and MB could stick to the luxurious comfort part.
Like them both, but love BMW. Fair enough aint it

you know Erik... we agree on more than you might thing, and I agree that the BMW drives more sporty, but it's not like the MB is a Cadillac or something? I mean people make the MB's sound like crappy handling cars, just because a BMW is marginally better... The data speaks for it's self... my CDI has .84g skid pad handing... better than the Audi A4, and BMW 325i's of recent years... not bad for a diesel taxi.
