Automatics are also dumb... the computer doesn't know what to do for a second or two. Manuals > Auto's... end of story.
I think the reason why the manual Porsches have better acceleration times than the automatic ones is because the guys who test drove those cars were all professional drivers. Normal drivers don't possess such skills. Some can't even shift smoothly let alone drive the car to its full potential.

Thus, I think Autos > Manuals (for most drivers) but Manuals are more fun

Clowned a C230K Tonight

On way home, waiting at light and this red egg-shaped CLK230 Hatchback pulls up and starts throwing revs. It's a CHICK!

So it goes green and she SIDESTEPS THE CLUTCH or nuetral drops it, chirped a little. I 'bout couldn't contain myself from laughing but I did manage to pour the coals on the diesel and hand her *** to her.

She was kinda big, maybe weight played a factor. At the next light she rolled down her window and asked if my car was a diesel. MmmmHmmmmm.

She was big enough to burn diesel. So off goes the little C listing to Port, and I too go about my merry way home.

Just a tiny bit less slow than the C230K. It would be driver race, anybody could win.

If your quick enough you should be able to take an '85 Mack Dump Truck, but only if he's carrying a full load of gravel. If he's empty, you got no shot.

Good Luck!

Cars
I raced my friends 325i auto with my C230 SS loaner car and he won unless i power braked, it not only gives the 230 a good start, but I think the momentum helps it along the way to beating the 325i. First couple of races I just pressed the gas at green and he would get a better start but not gain much on me afterwards, when I learned how to control the launch his advantage was gone and the 230 (1.8) would beat him every time. So I'd say it depends on the driver although the 325 sedan did have an intake whereas the loaner is clearly stock. I raced the 325i with my c230 (2.3) and there was nothing to worry about, the 2.3 is faster than the 1.8
