was driving to my cousins house from his brothers shop (harbor motorsports) in my gfs slk350 (i was driving, she was the passenger) after just putting on some springs (h&r). my cousin was driving his dads sl 500 (05). we got the chance to line up at the light, it turns green and we both floor it, i pulled about 1/5 of a car length thru 1st gear, and then kept on pulling until i let off at about 75-80, he was about 3/4 of a car length behind by that time. no doubt the 7speed in the slk made the difference.
* sl has heavy *** lowenhart 20's
* slk 2 people vs. sl 1 person

i knew the slk was faster to 60;i didnt think that the slk will keep pulling, i thought that after about 70-75 the slwould start to pull closer very slowly.
i was surprised at the strong mid range and how quickly the box was shifting.

yup.. I can see a new E550 beating me up with my C32.
7 spd and all that torque would be a good thing!
I need the ECU for sure!

I'd bet the SLK was a little faster. Have an SL500 and have driven the SLK350...the SLK is smaller and weighs less - it's a matter of physics.
However, I'd never think about getting SLK instead of an SL. I'd HAPPILY drive my "slower" car and have the full size of the SL as well as all the additional things that you can have in the SL. The SLK is nice, but it's no SL.

I'd rather have my SL than any SLK or CLK ....SL = class, heritage and prestige. If I wanted to go as fast as possible I wouldn't own a heavy, luxurious and safe 100,000+ Mercedes flagship convertible.

No need to get nasty with each other, guys.
According to Road & Track, the SLK350 is faster than the SL500 (0-60 and the 1/4mile)
SLK350 (6 speed manual)
0-60mph: 5.5sec
1/4mile: 13.8sec@103.9mph
SL500 (5 speed auto)
0-60mph: 6.1sec
1/4mile: 14.5sec@98.7mph
Yes, a SL500 with the new 7 speed auto may be a touch faster, but I don't think it will make up the big difference between these two cars.

Like I said initially, it's a matter of physics. The SLK has more power per ratio of it's size and weight so naturally it would be the faster car.
But either car is a fine car...it's the difference of whether you want a convertible that's a "boy racer" or a "grown ups" car (neither reference being bad). I'd rather have the bigger car with the bigger engine and not listen to the engine wind as much.
I do like the new SLK better than the old one - I felt wedged into the old one and I'm only 6'1. But the new SLK is still a bit small for my taste and I don't like having a wall up against the back of the seats - I like having the space the SL provides before the back window and not feelng like I'm sitting on the rear wheels.
Then again, I don't ride around Atlanta looking for people to "kill." Most of the roads here in town are between 25 and 35 mph with a stop light about every other block so the kill factor isn't that great; so by the time you could get some speed you'd b e stopping. On the expressways everyone is already doing 80-90mph.
It's all in what makes you happy (but I still like the SL better).

Ever since I was a child I wanted a SL. I had models of the classic 300sl and my first Mercedes was a R129 which I was in love with. I am quite biased to my opinion, and I understand the whole speed + luxury thing I guess...but still cant even compare the cars we are discussing fairly due to my bias. I just could never own any other Mercedes convertible except the SL...and when someone says they would take a SLK over a SL I just can't relate
