is this possible??

Ok, so last night i am driving home around 9pm and the highway is pretty empty, so I anm cruising in the passing lane at about 85mph....... as I slowly pass a newer WRX-STI with a mid 20's lad in it, I hope he'll press it and try to run me , although thinking I will probably lose, it would still be fun. He does exactly that, so I slow to let him by and we get side by side and after 3 runs, (yes 3) the result was exactly the same -- My 4200lb CL slowly walked him to about 5 cars or so from 80-125 the first, 75-115 the 2nd, and 80-120 the 3rd time ..... I knew they lose steam at speed, but did not expect to win, especially all 3. anyway, as the road split, I looked over to "smile and nod", and the poor sport never even looked at me--sore loser.

Yep, they launch like a leppard and have the endurance of Homer Simpson.

yeah, ive run a few new STI's with the same outcome. The only way they're beating you is if its worked with an aftermarket turbo or something, but thats not as common as you might think.

What year STi? I'm not buying it. A CL500 will not walk a newer STi, stock for stock.

not sure of the year... just that it was an STI-- I would not have believed it either, until it happend 3x- the 2nd run he even hit it just before I did- the other 2 runs I got the jump-- could've been a regular WRX, with the wing, hood, STI logos, ect, but heck, a kill's a kill

Not doubting your story, and yeah, a kill's a kill, but a STi should be much quicker. Horrible driver on his part?

He was probably pissed that his spoiler-ed and turbo-ed rally rocket was beat out on a highway run by a luxury coupe. M-G has an excellent point, in your scenario, it was an all motor top end showdown. Off the line, the STi would be alot quicker, but on the freeway, the big 8 would reel him in. Nice kill.

Seems right to me but maybe not buy that much. STI's are very very quick out of the dig, but after 80 slow as heck I think the top speed on them is around 150 mph they are geared for under 100 mph acceleration. But you have to realize the benz has a tad bit more power and is probably more aerodynamic than the STI not to mention the MB is geared to cruise at the STI's top speed.

Not really. I believe the STi makes its peak boost at a higher rpm range than the 500's. Most four bangers are top end machines and eighters are low end motors.

Seems plausible since thinking about it now, 4200 lbs doesn't matter once you're moving at 80 mph.

100% right. That's why STI's kick *** for dirt rallys.

Are you sure it was an STI? Most people see the spoiler and just automatically assume it's an STI, when in many cases it's not. A lot of STI owners swap trunks with regular WRX owners because they don't like the spoiler (even though it's functional), so it's very possible that you were going up against a regular WRX and not an STI.

I've had 6 years of playing around with these cars and it doesn't matter whether wrx, sti or evo, the CL500 will be faster above 80mph. (unless the 2.0l turbo is considerably souped up)

STI's and Evo's have very little punch on the highway, I happened upon a pair of them racing down Rt. 3 in Jersey on my way into NYC and passed them both like they were standing still. I'm sure with the right bolt-ons they'd have a better chance of keeping up, but I was surprised just how little power both cars had on the top end.
