CL600 vs. C5 Corvette (Z06?)

Ok, so I'm going home last night and about to hit the freeway when a guy in a C5 corvette comes pulling up and dry hopping at me. He had Z06 wheels on it, so I thought it was a Z06. So I pull out of the turn lane and head into the #2 lane going straight and pull to the stop. At the stop light, he revs and inches forward while I just sit and power brake to spool up the turbos a bit. Light turns green and I just nut on the gas and take off. He held with me for about 2 seconds, then I saw him in my rear view. I think he stayed in it until he knew he wasnt going to pass me, let alone catch up, then backed out of it. So next stop light comes up and hes revving doing the same thing, but I didnt want to waste my gas on another race. He takes off and I just cruise like the "little old mercedes" he thought he thought it was. Once I catch up to him (regular driving), I look over and he actually gave me a wave. I thought that was cool, but I still laughed all the way home. So did my passenger!

IT must be a Z06 because it did stay with you, and he must have mis-shifted and lost some distance. The Z06's are high 4 second range cars.

I agree, sounds like a Z06......

...only way a non-Z06 C5 could hang with a CL600tt is with a boatload of mods, or spray.

The guy had Z06 wheels, but all the badging was gone. No way of really telling, especially at night. Either way, I just thought it was funny because I know in his mind, he thought I was just another "sucker" to his vette. Oh well, now he'll learn to watch out for anything with a "600" on a benz...

Actually, the C5 Z06 is very distinctive. First, the Z06 only comes in a "coupe" model so the roof is entirely different from the non-Z06 variety. Also, there is a large brake vent behind the doors that is not on the regular C5.

I've run two Z06's in my E55. They are very light and quick. From the dig, it's very difficult for me to get out. But, from the roll, it's no contest. I've even run a modded C5 Z06 and pulled from a roll.

Here's a couple of links (2 different views). This race I had 4 people in the car.

Hey, great story. Most people don't give the big Benzes enough cred. Car and Driver got a 0-60 of 3.6 for a SL600, so I'm guessing a CL would be 3.7-3.8. No way a C5 Z06 could keep up.

What would make the CL600 slower than the SL600?

C5 Z06 have a black vent in front of the rear tires just behind the doors while the C6 Z06 have a cut out that is color matched to the car.

I am sure going forward that he will respect any 600 Benz he comes across

The thinking was that it had been tuned. People in the AMG forums (and the SL forum as well, afaik) pointed out that the article made mention of a feature that is not on the standard SL, but is part of this tuner's package (forget which one)....judging by the numbers, I'd say they were right! An SL600 should be more like a low-mid 4 second 0-60 and a 1/4 in the 12.3-12.5 range.

Your cousins were either being nice to your ego, or they were too busy messing with their seat heaters, because I have never had a problem taking C5 Z06's at the track. I am dead even with the guys in the C6 Z06's, and my SL55 is just slightly modded....and this is on road courses.

Wait.... ......just give me a minute to digest this.... ..... So your telling us your 4400lb tank is beating C5Z06's at the track and keeping in your words "Dead Even" w/guys in the C6 Z06

Please tell me where you'll be performing your stand up comedy routine next?? This stuf is priceless hahahaha I think you've been playing w/your seat heater to much and fried something...Hahahahahahah...Please stop I nearly fell outta my chair laughing

The funniest part is you accentuate "This happened on a road course or auto X" hell if it was in the 1/4 you'd at least have a shot of maybe tieing the C5Z06..
But the Auto X???????????????????Please both C5, & C6 Z06 Vette's OWN you all day long 365 days a year there buddy...too funny......

This has to be an April fools joke or something?? Wait let me check the Calender...............Nope just like I thought it's freakin' New years eve!!!!!

sorry, that's BULL****, an sl55 keeping up w/z06's ON THE TRACK? BWAHAHHAHA!! i'm guessing it's them being nice to your ego my friend. straight line- maybe, on a track, not unless the drivers are crippled.

Thericker,

Unfortunately you live in CA, because If you were in NY, I Would bet a lot of $$$ that my 4400lb CL600 would badly beat your corvette in any race: from a stop, a roll, at any speed every time we raced.

You should do a little homework on the CL600. Make sure it's a 2003+ because the car comes stock with a 5.5 litre twin turbo V12 493hp and 590tq. This car stock does 12.5 second 1/4 miles. The twin turbos make this car very tunable: I recently did the Renntech ECU/TCU upgrade for $6,000 and now my car has 625 hp and 750 tq. Others that have done the same upgrade as me have posted 11.7 second 1/4 miles compared to the stock car's 12.5.

I have a good friend with a 2006 Z06 and his car barely beats mine. We raced a few times from a dead stop until about 100mph and his car is less than 1 car ahead of me. From 30-100 my car is about neck and neck.

Firstly, these cars do not drive themselves. There is an element of driver skill involved. For the best example of this, have a look at the following, where Sabine Schmidt lapped the Nurburg ring in a delivery van in about the same time that Jeremy Clarkson did it in a Jaguar:
http://www.topgear.com/content/timet...broadband.html

So if IngenereAMG is a track hound, it's entirely possible. But yeah, with equal drivers, stock to stock, on a track the C6 would win bigtime.

Oh, and btw, Ricker: E55s are in the same as the xx600s; we've had a few bone stock E55s hitting 12.0s. They routinely dyno at 425 rwhp, indicating about 520-530 crank, so don't underestimate them. Here's a vid and slip for one, running a 12.07 @ 116, stock:

except he stated that the z06 was modded (they take very well to mods) and that he has done it several times. there are c5 z06's hitting 11's stock and the c6's we all know about.

Modifying a car doesn't modify the skill of the driver. And he's talking about a track, not a 1/4 mile strip. In straightline acceleration, of course a C6 Z06 is faster than an SL55.

so you're saying that drivers equal, the sl55 will be able to keep up w/either model z06 at a track w/any type of twisties?? the straightline is not what i'm doubting, it may be possible. but with twisties and consistently? NO WAY. i've driven a few sl55's, they are pigs.

that being said, i'd take an sl55 over a z06 any day.

Dude...do you think that there is *any* driver skill involved in pulling a fast time at a race track, or do you think it is all vehicle?

Do you think that Michael Schumacher could pull a faster time in an Z06 than you in a Z06? Do you think he could pull a faster time in an SL55 than you in an Z06?

If you'd ever been to a track event, which I doubt, you would *routinely* see faster cars getting lapped by slower cars. Speed is ONE element in a race track victory, but driver skill is far, far more important.

Did you even bother to watch the video I listed a few moments ago? It showed Sabine Schmidt pulling almost the identical lap time at Nurburgring in a delivery van that Jeremy Clarkson, who drives and tests cars for a living, got in a Jaguar!

So, if driver skill plays no part, how do you explain that?

Here's another video to watch: an E34 M5 (NOT the 400 hp E39 or the 500 hp E60) with passengers on board taking out several Porsche 911s at Nurburgring. This car weighed about 1000 pounds more than a 911 *without* passengers, yet thsi "pig" was easily able to outrun the superior-handling, faster, better-braking 911s, because of *driver skill*.
http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...burgring&hl=en

So, let's recap what I wrote: I wrote that *if* this guy is a really good driver, it is *entirely* possible that he could pull Z06s on a track, even though they are faster and handle better...I also wrote that given equal drivers, the Z06 would win.

But you are entirely disounting driver skill, and that's crazy. Driver skill is THE biggest factor on a track.

But all drivers are *not* created equal.

The way Ingineeramg, wrote it,I believe he was intimating, DRIVER SKILL WAS EQUAL...And that his sl55 would beat both Z06's w/equal skill levels...Obviously driver skill is huge in Auto X challenges..

That is why I reacted the way I did..

Firstly I was referencing the C5 Z06 would beat or tie his modded sl55 in the 1/4 not my near STOCK C6....The C5 Z06 Vettes routinely pull sub 12 sec 1/4 miles BONE STOCK....yes 11.90-11.80 w/good drivers obviously

Now onto my C6 mr. know it all.....I have the C6 w/A4 auto trans w/stock 3.15 gears...
They routinely put down 12.5xx @ 110-112 in the 1/4

Here's small 1/4 mile list of BONE STOCK C6 A4 auto's just like mine w/members name from Corvetteforum.com
-----Factory Showroom Stock--------------
OrangeC6--12.56 @ 112- 2005 A4 3.15 gears
Demented--12.71 @ 111-2005 A4 3.15 gears
Yell03------12.57 @ 110.67- 2005 A4 3.15 gears

-------Lightly Moded C6 A4 2005 w/Simple bolt-ons or Drag radials-------
Dennis50NJ--11.62 @ 117.48--Headers, 160 stat, tune, converter, drag tires
NastyC6----11.76 @ 117--Headers, 160 stat, tune, converter, drag tires
Cucchiara---11.87 @ 113--Headers, 160 stat, tune, converter, drag tires
CTVette05--12.37 @112--Headers, cat-back
Poncherello--12.43 @ 112.78--CAI, Tune
Floozine-----12.50 @ 115.20-----Tune
FLC6--------12.55 @ 112---CAI, Cat-back

Still think you'd want to bet the farm if say I had the same simple mods as Dennis50NJ's C6?? I know those modded CL600's lay down between 11.77-11.8xx's at the 1/4 who's running from who there

The 2005 C6 w/A4 and stock 3.15 gears is NO JOKE in STOCK form & especially competitive when moded as described in my list above....And just as fool proof in the 1/4 as your Mercedes w/Auto 5 speed...

Please tell me how your ranting threats of blistering speed have any thing to do w/my talking about a modded SL55 against a lightly modded C5Z06?

You Cl600 is leagues different is perf, and perf potential when modded than the SL55 in question

Chil-out homie.....you aint unbeatable in your moded CL600....You need to do some more research, before you start throwing #'s around Have agreat new year SPEEDY!!
