My CL600 vs SL55

My friend just picked up a 2004 SL55; I think it's stock, but not 100% sure. Of course, he wants to see how his car does against mine, which was no problem with me. I think he knew the outcome, but wanted to see how good his car would do.

yesterday was another great day for a ride; we headed out to some open-highways in the late afternoon. From 70-130 I was about 2 cars ahead and from 50-100ish, I was only about 1 1/2 cars ahead. I must admit that his car was faster than I expected; he definitely hung with me pretty good.

We didn't want to go crazy, so that was about it. We didn't race from a stop because it was chilly at 55 degrees, so I wouldn't get traction.

I would asume your CL is stock?

EDIT:

I see you have Renntech mods. The race should not have been close.

Pulling 1 1/2 - 2 car lengths ahead in my opinion (in a 5 second race) is a pretty solid kill. I did some research on the '04 SL55 and the car does 12.4 in the 1/4 mile and 0-60in the early 4s.

How much did you expect me to beat the SL55 with my Renntech upgrade? That car is probably as fast as the stock '03+ CL600. He said his car has 493hp; I thought it has 469hp.

The outcome is much closer than I would've expected. With renntech mods, I would've thought that Cl600 would beat SL55 by at least 3 cars from 50-100mph and totally destroy it from a 70mph roll. Looks like that was a particularly healthy SL55 your friend got... they do make ~493bhp stock BTW.

Maybe it's another case of Renntech not measuring up?

1/4 mile time and 0-60 times rely on traction from a dead stop, the best comparison would be to look at the two cars trap speeds. A stock 55 is no slouch at all from a roll and makes a ton of power and torque under the curve. your outcome isnt bad relative to your very short 50-100mph run, **** thats nothing and goes by in a flash, i guarantee you that if you held it to the top of third which would have been about 120 it would have been 5 to 6+ car lengths. As a margin of safety you could check your intercooler pump and get a quick dyno.

Vantage,

I appreciate your concern about my upgrade not measuring up.

My CL600 after the Renntech upgrade was a night and day difference in power. I feel my car is running the way it should. If you read these "kill stories" threads often, then you would have noticed some of my other recent races: my car was about dead even with C6 Z06 and the Ford GT. I recently beat an '03 Murcielago and I kept up well (almost)with my friend's Carrera GT, so I think my car with the upgrade is running great.

Do you ever get into it when you actually have to 'drive' the car.......in other words turn the wheel and attack a few corners, other than just point the wheel straight, mash the gas and pray. That is usually the great equalizer.

The CL handles amazingly well for a car with its heft. Here are some Top Gear track times. Notice that the CL65 was faster around the track than many dedicated sports cars. I hope this helps you understand that the CL also handles the track pretty well too.

IngenereAMG,

I wouldn't bother racing supercars if I had to do anything other than go straight. I never said the CL is going to hang with Z06, Lambos, or Ford GT on a track. It's fast as **** in the 1/4, but the 4500lb beast is not for the track.
