2005 E55 Wagon
K2 Wagon versus 997 TT

Coming back from lunch with a passenger, both of us are stuffed full of soup and noodles (went to a great new Vietnamese noodle restaurant). I make a right turn onto the road and see a silver porsche weaving in and out of traffic in front of me. Then, the silver porsche quickly slows down, I get into the left lane to turn left, and I see why the silver porsche slows down. There is a bright red 997 Porsche Turbo and I guess the silver porsche slowed down to take a look. I do not know specifically what year the red 997 TT was but it looked like a 2004 (b/c it looked just like a friends 2004 997 TT). The red 997 TT had a modified exhaust. I am now behind the red 997 TT b/c I too need to turn left. Keep in mind that I need to use the bathroom very badly, with all that noodle soup and water swishing around in me from lunch. Left turn light goes green, the red 997 TT makes the left turn and then floors it. No cars in front of the red 997 TT and no cars between him and me and we are on a clear 3 land road. We get to the lights. No traffic in front of us, he looks a me, I look at him, my friend says to me "no way," (as in I have no chance against the 997 TT). Again, clear 3 lanes ahead, straight even road, a little uphill, with no one in sight and the next light about 1/2 mile ahead. We both take off together. Now according to my friend: (1) I led the red 997 TT by 1/4 to 1 car length (it varied depending on the shifting by the 997 TT); (2) somewhere at higher speeds he crawled up to either even or 1/4 car lead for the 997 TT (again, depending on the shifting by the 997 TT); (3) when he had no more shifts he was 1/4 car length ahead; and (4) at that point I was creeping up and closing the 1/4 lead. We both slowed down for the light up ahead. At this point, I really, really have to use the bathroom. But I want to be courteous and a good sport (b/c technically I lost), I lowered my window, noticed the aftermarket sound of his exhaust and gave the guy a thumbs up and was going to ask him if his 997 TT was modified. But mmmm ...........he did not look too happy and just gave me a stared look and an abrupt head nod. I got the impression and so too my passenger that the guy was pissed that a station wagon beat him in the beginning he had to struggle with a station wagon at higher speeds. The light turns green, he floors it again and heads for the left lane. I, needing to let out all that noodle soup, followed the road straight head to the nearest avaible bathroom.

Technically, I lost b/c 997 TT had the less then 1/4 car length lead until we both slowed down ........... but it was close. No too bad for a station wagon!!!

A 2004 TT is a 996. 07+ is 997. Very nice, im sure he was steaming over the fact that he nearly got ran by a wagon.

If it looked like your friends 2004 it was a 996TT which is slower than a 997TT. What did the exhaust look like? Was it enclosed in the body kit or was it at the bottom of the body kit?

Based on your results and visual observations I think you raced a 996TT. Nice run.

Thanks. I do not know too much about Porsches. The exhaust was enclosed within the body kit. One exhaust on each side, the exhaust was oval shaped - but not completely oval, it was an odd oval shape. I hope this makes sense, going by memory. Does this mean he had an aftermarket exhaust if it was within the body kit? I remember my friends turbo was not enclosed within the body kit.

Sounds now like a 997TT?? And that sounds like the factory exhaust too. I also forgot your wagon was a K2 so the race seems realistic versus a 997TT.

I do not know too much about Porsches, but my passenger friend went on ebay and confirmed that the car we raced looked just like the 2007 997 turbos that are on sell on ebay.

Actually, my wagon could be K2+. It has the K2 stuff, with a Renntech CF airbox, Johnson Pump in place of the stock IC pump and VRUS 80 TB. I do not know what year that Porsche TT was but it was fast. Even with all my mods I still lost, close, but still a loss. But that's alright, I love my wagon and I know that Porsche owner was very surprised that a station wagon led a little and kepted up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Considering 4 wheel drive, less weight and the rear mounted engine you should have been smoked by any 997 up to 100. Maybe he just couldn't drive it, like most clueless Ferrari drivers who appear on youtube with alarming frequency ?

Regards

Andy

Your probably right or I could have raced a 996 TT and the owner just put on the body kit and exhaust from a 997 TT.

Having owned a E55 with K2 and a 996TT (stock). The E55 with K2 is definitely faster in the butt dyno.
