Almost a WRX kill

On my way to Louisiana I passed a blue WRX, right after I passed him (at about 82mph) he gets behind me, very close, so I decide to floor it and leave him in the dust, to my surprise the guy was right on my tail to about 130-135 mph!!!!!! Then I could see him falling behind, I stopped accelerating and wait for him, he catches up, we had an 18 wheeler in front, went down to about 70 mph, and then the 18 wheeler moved I moved to the side, let him get next to me and I floored it again, he is right there! next to me, just a little to the rear of my car till 130-135 mph!!! WOW, this guy most have something in this car! Not what I had head from a WRX!!

Does anybody have any idea? NOS, s/c, turbo?

So technically I did kill the WRX because after 135-135 he was left behind badly!

Turbo...Someone who is more "in the know" with these matters, (my 24 yr old nephew) informed me that owner/friends are getting an "easy"' 300 horsepower out of these things. The new "STI" version will be bumped up from 2.2 to 2.5 liters and will be rated at 300 horsepower and 300 lbs of torque in stock form. Initial performance #'s show 0-60 in 5.1 and the 1/4 in mid-late 13's @ 101mph + ...Don't know about the durability issue, but these things will be a "pain in the ***" as time goes by. It's unfortunate that we'll have to "keep our foot in it" a hell of alot longer to get our point across. I suspect soon, they will be getting their "point across".

Is it possible the guy hit a limiter at 135? Those cars are definitely quick and the new WRX STi should be pretty damn fast.... I wouldn't buy one, but I think they are pretty cool.

I'm sure it does have a limiter, but at the same time it had to be a modified car, I've heard (from guys with WRXs here in town) that they are not very good after 80 mph in their stock form.

yeah, pulling 400hp out of the WRX isn't all too difficult. there's in fact a company out of colorado (if i can find the link, i'll post it) that has a turbo upgrade for the WRX that'll push it near the 400 mark, for about $1000. but i reckon (yes, i used reckon, it was my goal for today) just about any turbine company (i.e. HKS) could just supply you with a bigger turbo. i don't know how long the car will last though. but a question for those who know more about turbo: is it possible to do a twin turbo with a small turbo (for low end, faster spool up) and a big turbo (higher pressure, more high end power)?

I have this car. Not too luxurious but it can go. Reliability is not a problem with this car. I use it at the tracks and dog it out constantly. I have yet to bring it into the dealership for any work whatsoever. It's really cheap to get horsepower out of and I can run with the best of them.
The only problem with the car was Class. It isn't classy at all. I guess that's why I went out and bought the new E500.

Companies that mod WRX's are Cobb Tuning, Vishnu, and TurboXS. That's to name a few.

Smile No, he definitely wasn't stock.

Stock, the WRX is a mid-hi 14 second car, but turbo cars like the WRX and Audi S4 are pretty easy to mod for some big HP increases. One of the fastest local cars I've encountered is a tuned WRX...I beat him in 2/2 races, but only by a carlength, contrasted by the three or four lengths by which I normally beat the (new) M3...

So yeah, modded, those puppies can move. And since they're so light, a 50-hp gain will *really* perk them up.

They're not that light... they weigh over 3k pounds cause of the AWD system.
I doubt that car you raced was stock cause in stock form they're pretty restricted cause of emmission laws. They have 3 catalytic converters. 1 before the turbo and 2 after the turbo. Max boost stock is about 14lbs, I believe.

Hmm..personally, I think 3085 pounds is pretty light for a four-door sedan...

...(WRX's weight from edmunds.com); that's only 100-200 pounds more than a Boxster S. It is also several hundred pounds lighter than an E55, and that was my point: a 30 hp gain on a 3100 pound car will make a *lot* more difference than a 30 hp gain on a 3750 pound car.

Bottom line is, there are plenty of kits available to get those Scoobies down into the low 13's...one of the easier cars out there to tune up pretty hot...and they handle extremely well, too. But they are as ugly as sin...

I have been a WRC fan before people even knew about it... they would look at me funny when i had it up as buddy icons etc. The problem with the WRX is that their 5spd tranny's are "glass." You can tune it but the tranny won't handle it. Go ahead and visit I-club.com... you can read horror story after story about crapped out tranny's. If you leave it stock then it's fine but if u modify, beware. I know at least a half a dozen people with WRX's so I have seen what they have done to those cars... they are great little cars... total bang for buck.

The good news is they will be replacing the BUG EYE look next year.

BTW POCH...it would be even closer if you were to race the WRX from a stopped position cuz of the AWD.

Hey Poch, there are plenty of cars out there that are faster than ours, ....but what you'd rather have a 400 HP Subaru or a Benz?
We go fast in style! :p

That's right, I've always seen it that way, I can make a Kia Sephia go faster than a viper, but I travel in style.

Being a subaru enthusiast lemme teach you guys a few things. First there is no kit that gives a wrx 400hp for 1000 dollars. That is, assuming your talking about the flywheel, a 173 hp increase over stock, and if your talking about at the wheels it approx 235 hp increase. The 1/4 time is about 14.2-14.5 @ 92. With the AWD it handles so much better then my moms CLK 430 Cabrio. There is also no limiter for the top speed, stock it tops out at a drag limited 140.
