C43 Vs CLK430
On my way home from the ghetty at like 4:30am last night, I was on 137th when some dropped silver CLK430 was pacing me. I looked over to him but couldnt see the driver because of the tinted mirrors. Sure enough, I know he was gunna run my C43. We paced each other at 30mph for a while and then he punched it first. I dropped my C43 from 4th down to 2nd gear and punched it. I gained back the jump he got on me within a few seconds. As I got into 3rd gear, I pulled about 1/2 a car and kept it there the whole way till we shut down at about 110mph. Now that was fun. Its races like that that leave me with a smile on my face for the rest of the week. What was interesting was that both pack 4.3L V8s (though mine is AMG tuned), but I doubt he knew that. The CLK430s are supposed to pull off low 14s in the 1/4 if im correct. Im pretty sure whoever in that CLK was surprised they got beat by a W202 chasis.
Bottom line... W202 + M113.43 owns W208 + M113.43!!!!
It is weird because i read in Magazines that the CLK430 does the 1/4 in 14.2 seconds and the C43 does it in 14.4!!!!

A clk430 can't pull 14.2. I would say more like 14.7-14.9. I ran a clk430 in my brother's prelude who pulls a 14.7 and we beat the clk430. He's auto so no room for "oh i missed 2nd gear" "i burned out too much" etc. Anybody out there who has ran there clk's at the track? What did you guys pull?

Actually, they are a mid-lo 14 car.
If you beat one in a Prelude, I'd say that the guy in the 430 probably left his traction control on, which kills them off the line. Two friends of mine, one with a stock '01 6-spd S4, the other with an '02 CLK430, did repeated runs some time back: from a dead stop, the S4 would edge out the CLK by a few lengths due to its AWD launch, but from repeated 5-100 runs, the cars were *dead* even.

Maybe he did have traction control on...I'm not sure. But also with the S4, that car requires a good driver to launch and shift....the driver can make a world of a differance in a race. But until i see or hear someone tell me what they pulled at the track with a clk430...I still don't believe it can hit a 14.2 or even a 14.5. Thats just my opinion. Nice chattin

Well, check out the April 1999 issue of Road & Track
Here's what they got in their test of the CLK430:
0-60: 6.1
0-100: 14.6
1/4: 14.5@99.5
Also, as I said wrt the S4, they did *both* 0-100 and 5-100 runs, for precisely that purpose: to determine which was faster from a stop and from a roll.

14.5....pretty good....I really would not have expected that, but I guess its true. Where did they hit a 14.5 at....what track....in cali? I go out to the sacramento raceway.

Good question...I don't know where they do their testing.
U might check their website & see if they have a contact page; they might be able to tell you.
If you take one to the strip, run with traction control off, and try power-braked launches; launch with revs as high as you can manage, but if your wheels spin for more than 10 feet or so, lower the launch RPM & try again...that spin will extract a large penalty from your ET!
Have fun!
