Hi
I was told that installing a cool air intake might help give you better gas mileage is that true?

May, but not enough that you would even notice it. Stay with the std intake or other problems may occur.

Take a closer look at the intake design on ML; you will see that the air being pulled in already is fresh air (not the hot air from the engine compartment). The only negative about the stock design is that it's little restrictive on the WOT. However, on WOT (Wide Open Throttle), you are wasting ton of gas.

I have experimented with [cold air] intakes on BMWs. The only thing they do is increase the intake noise; as a consequential benefit, they may increase minimal gains.

By the way, the minimal gain you'd get from cold air intake can be achieved on most cars by removing all the heavy junk from the trunk/cabin. People store their life savings in their trunk and drag it around in everyday commute.
