Take a look at those links, although they won't teach you directly how to change your oil, it's a good start, and from there you should be able to gain some valuable information.

Now kinda unrelated to it, are you changing your oil because you are just that kinda person (DIYer) or because it costs money at the dealer to change it since Mercedes ended the free maint. program?

No because my nearest MB dealer is 50 miles away that might help you understand why i rather do it my self then take it up for a simple oil change

Totally understandable.

Now, you do know that your car will tell you when it needs an oil change? It's a feature for Mercedes' FFS (Flexible Service System) and will tell you when you need Service A or B.

However, depending on the service, it's not just an oil change. It's actually a checkup on various things. Would this help justify the trip?

There's a link from a dealer themselves about what goes on in the services.

Ah gotcha, I thought you were new to the Mercedes' world.

I hope I haven't thrown you off your quest to find out how to DIY oil change on the ML. That wasn't my intentions.

I didn't think the FSS worked that way for MY98 through MY01. Be careful here and check your manual - remember the oil sludge problem ML had to settle a law suit for? You're using Mobil-1 synthetic I hope. At what intervals do you intend to be doing the oil changes? With the synthetic, you can go as far as 10K. With dyno, I'll stay at no more than 4K between changes. Remember also that the A and B service are more than oil changes alone. Check your owner's manual for the items that have to be checked.

If you stick with dyno oil, the I'd advice you to do the 50 mile drive every two oil changes, or DIY the conplete A or B service which, I stress again, is more than an oil change. It's not much more than an oil change but it's more than an oil change. I don't have the spec A and B service for MY98 but I have for MY02 and MY05. If you want it, PM/email me.

Yes, the FSS was in the 98's and worked the same way. It also called for conventional oil and that was fine if you just did not drive very short trips and the engine never got to correct operating temp. However I too suggest synthetic for now. My thoughts are that if you have to ask the questions you have do not do it yourself without watching someone do it first.

first of MB change the system from FSS to Mercedes Benz Maintance system for the 05 models,

so the 05 models don't have that FSS anymore,

second the 350 didn't exist until 03,

so it's either from 03-05,

unless he has a 320 that exist during 98

00' ML 55 AMG; 08' Jeep Wrangler Unlimted (4 Door)
You might as well go ahead and hit up the spark plugs, Fuel filter and etc for the 60K service.
