Need help with Nav unit

I'm a relatively new owner of a 2002 ML320. I bought the car here in Hawaii but am relocting soon to California. Never having lived there, I'd like to get a Nav unit installed to help out with things. I've searched teh forums, and maybe I'm missing something, but in short, how do I do this? It sounds like a 2002 has an antenna laready built in, one just needs to connect the unit. I have a screen in the console and when I push the Nav, of course it tells me nothing is installed.

What part number am I looking for?
Should I buy from eBay/Craigslist, or are there OEM versions that are just as good?
I have disconnected the CD changer to have a Dension iPod integrated unit installed, but that should not effec anything, should it?

Mahalo for your help!

David

PS-What is a MCS unit?

If you have the single CD player in the MCS, then you have the NAV system. When your not using the NAV you can insert a CD and listen to it instead of using the CD Changer.

This should give you an idea on what is needed.

Good info, but outdated?

Asianml, thanks for the link but it seems a little dated. I guess I am looking for the exact part that I need. I look on eBay and I see MCS units that look nothing like mine, yet say the work on an ML.

Confused,
David

Thumbs down Nav vs Single CD Player

Sorry, but having the single CD player is not the same as having the CD version of the Nav system -- they have different part numbers. The single CD player is P/N A163 820 08 89, the CD Nav is P/N A163 820 09 89 or 163 820 09 89 90 and the DVD Nav is Q682 0821. The DVD system is best because you only have one disk for all the US; also I understand that Mercedes may soon stop providing updates for the CD disks. We special ordered our 2001 ML with only the single CD player and the cassette and it did not play the nav CD disks. We later installed the DVD version of the nav system in place of the single CD player. We got the whole DVD system from Sammy at MB Doctor http://mbdoctor.com/; he is great to work with and has both the CD and DVD versions at a great savings over the MB dealer's price. In addition he will provede complete Mercedes published instructions for your year model and has all the necessary cables (if needed).

The installation is very easy -- good luck!

It is dated, but the process is exactly the same. Like klingon said, check out Wolfgangs' site. There is a lot of useful information all about the ML. I learned a lot from him.

Wolf's site useful, but...

It did not get detailed enough. There is some vagueness, I 'spose, depending on your model year and his site did not give enough detail. As a novice, I'm looking for as exact info as I can get. So, does anyone have one of these units (drive only, it seems from my reading) and if so, what is the model number so I can google it, see my dealer, etc.

Thanks again for any leads.

David

WRONG Again!! A single CD player was an available option if nav was not purchased. If the vehicle has nav then the nav slot can act as a single CD when a nav disc is not inserted. Asianlml, spend some time in school like a 10 year old should and stop trying to answer questions you know nothing about!!

First it's 12 now 10, get it right, it's 14.

I couldn't find anything that was specific enough so I gave him that just for basics on what he needs to do.

I douubt you are as old as you say. Generally 14 yr olds have enough sense to listen and learn, not put forth incorrect information.

Not all 14 year olds. I would prove it, but I don't know how I would. But lets just drop this and get back on topic.
