My wife drives a 2005 ML500. I'm seldom in the car, even more seldom drive it, so I've never really learned the nav system operation very well.

When we drive along a newer road that the nav doesn't display, a series of blue dots appear onscreen tracing our path. These blue dots seem to be retained in memory? I notice they don't ever seem to go away. We have a long winding driveway leading up to our house, and the display now looks like we live in front of a lake, with all that blue in front of it. I also see the blue area growing around frequently visited shopping centers, etc.

Is there a way to clear these blue areas?

There is a route tracing option in the system (I have seen it before and read about it in my manual but never used it). Go into the route setup screens to turn it off.
