The auto transmission on my 2002 August ML 270 Cdi "hangs" when I accelerate hard in the 1st or 2nd gear and release the accelerator before the gear can change. Then if I switch off the engine and start again the fault gear shifting is back to normal. I got the oil and filter changed but the problem persists.

What could be the cause? How can I trouble shoot the problem?
