alarm going off....

hey guys i have a 2001 ML320 thats out of warranty, has around 50k miles. Last week the center window switches started acting up so we replaced. A couple days ago the alarm started going off without anybody breaking in, I tried starting the vehicle and re-armed the alarm and even left the car without locking the car and the alarm started going off 2 mins later. I have replaced the battery just a little less than 6 months ago.

I did a search and it seems the most common problem is the Trip Computer. Anyone have any idea how much would the dealership charge me for this with install ??? Thanks all..

Most likely its the glass breakage sensor or the tow away sensor, both of which are part of the trip computer. There have been a number of improvements in this so be certain that when you get a new one its the latest part number. Most of the junk thats sold on E Bay and such is not the latest or most current part number. Dealer is your best bet. Thais was not an uncommon problem and I had experienced it in both my 98 and 02 but both were resolved with replacement of the trip computer. My 06 has never experienced this at all.

I was able to disable the tow away sensor as stated in the manual, the seems to be quiet now. I just hope its gonna stay like that till I get a chance to bring it to the dealer. I'm hoping total damaged would be around $300....

Remember that the tow away sensor as I remember will reset to ON when you start the car next time and must be reset to off after shut down.

How can you tell if your ML has the tow-away sensor? The owner's manual for my '98 says that the tow-away sensor and glass breakage sensors are optional.

My ML is a '98 320 with M1, Sunroof and Bose, if that makes any difference.

Last night, my alarm horn went off as a steady beep, rather than an intermittent beep-beep-beep like I get when I hit the panic button. The lights did not flash either. It stopped when I unlocked the doors. I re-locked them and 5 minutes later it did the same thing.

Two things that might have been contributing factors: I had rinsed the engine off (sloshed oil while topping it up) and the temperature dropped into the thirties.

As it was 11:30 at night, I removed the red wire from the alarm horn and called it a night. I plan on doing a more thorough investigation this weekend.

From what I remember the tow away and glass breakage alarm triggers were standard. I also recall the the owners manuals were not accurate. I remembered that my manual showed an external rear hatch lock that did not exist.

i got mine fixed a couple months ago and it was the trip computer....total damage was $2300 which included the trip computer, front and rear brake pads, fuel pump sender, and fuel filter. I had to get some problems done and im out of warranty, got around 53000 miles on her. This car has been to the dealer ship every year since I got her on 2001...good thing they were under warranty but it seems the bigger problems are coming and its out of warranty. Thinking of trading her in but the blue book values is around $11k-$13k, I dont think im willing to let go for that price...I might just end up getting a new one but not a MB car.

Thanks for the replies. If it's anything more than a few hundred to fix, I'll probably just leave the wire disconnected and not worry about it.
