Could be anything...

MAF Sensor could be dirty causing bad accel.
Dirty Air Filters
Spark Plugs might need to be changed
Fuel filter might need to be replaced
Bad Gas (some octane boosters or fuel additives can fix this)

What you need to do depends on your mileage.
If you don't have time to check these yourself I would take it in to the Dealer.
Some Dealers usually have free 10 point inspections.

Good luck.

My throttle response had dropped to pathetic and so had my mileage...I replaced the spark plugs and fuel filter at 94K miles...the improvement on both fronts was dramatic after the first 400 miles or so of driving...mileage climbed from 14 mpg to 18 mpg....throttle response and pickup restored to what it was when driven off the showroom...

just fyi, it's not a magnet. The thing you hit when you floor it is called the kickdown switch. Basically its telling the car you want to downshift and accelerate fast for one reason or another.

I had the same problem on my ML. I would be driving normally and suddenly the car would only speed up to a maximum of 50Km/hr and remain the same. Took car to the dealer who informed me that something was wrong in one of the cars computers and car was falling in to what the dealer referred to as "emergency mode". It than resulted I had a faulty passenger seat sensor.
