Broken ABS Pump - How dangerous is it to drive?

Hello,
I used to be a member of this site a few years back and was looking for some important advice again. This is truly appreciated.

The first (3) lights on my dashboard are now on which are ABS, ETS, and I forget the last one. I brought the car to my trusted local dealer Louden Motors and he informed me that the ABS / ETS PUMP UNIT p/n 004 431 0412 needs to be replaced. Apparently the unit got corroded and he is not even to repair it like he usually does.

So the total costs to replace the unit are $1900 ($1600 for the part) . I asked him what if I don't replace the unit and he informs me that I will have no anti-lock, traction control, or active stability and my braking system will basically be the same as the cars from the 80's.

I read up about not having anti-lock brakes and it seems its pretty dangerous. I would love to get this fixed but do not want to take my last $2000 out of the bank to have this done.

Can I have some honest opinions or advice about the situation. And also if anyone knows where I may be able to find a used module.

Thanks for the help, I truly appreciate it.

Since these rarely go bad, you may have good luck with a used one. Try Potomac German Auto.

This is a very important piece of safety equipment and should be operational. If you are involved in an accident that has been effected by this part you have a tremendous liability as you knew about the defect and continued to operate the vehicle. In addition to the ABS being out the other functions which are safety related are also out. Get it fixed!!
One other bit of advice if you only have 2 grand in the bank after the repair sell the ML and get a used econobox.

The only 'sensors' I know that is associated with the ABS system is the wheel speed sensor and they range from $74.00 to 89.00 each and the yaw rate sensor which is $425. You'd have to know which wheel sensor is bad, since there are 4 of them. Then you have the modulator valve and it's $1256.00, a control module for $561.00. This can go on and on. You really need a competent mechanic to diagnose WHAT is wrong or you could be throwing good money at it, forever.

There is a brake light switch and it is $24.00 and that would cause your brake lights to be non-functional as well as all your dash lights (ABS, ETS, etc.) to light up like a Christmas tree. Check and see if you have rear brake lights. If not, then THAT could be your problem and an easy fix, at that.

Bad brake light switch could be the problem but keep in mind that it may still be bad if your brke lights operate correctly, thats not always a factor.

If it runs I'll drive it
Find your local auto wreck, dismantle, or pick and pull. Try to allocate those parts and get the parts you need or someone you trust to get it for you. Sometimes the guys there who takes the items apart doesn't do it properly so you might be getting part of a part. Or go to your local german body shop. Dealership charges more on terms of putting a new part in & whatnot. If you can do it yourself then do it yourself. If you need someone else to do the job for you then start saving up.

Or best case solution is to sell your vehicle. And buy something else.
