egr tube ????
My 99 ml320 has a loud ticking only under load, with windows down. take my foot off gas its quiet! 140k miles, my friend thinks its the egr line. im sure its blocked because after reading this group it has rough idle but runs great. Good gas mileage. My question is do you think im at the point the tube is cracked or blocked or not the problem.

well the update is that I went ahead and changed the egr tube and no change, still has a loud tap tap tap noise only on load. You hear the sound best when a car or wall etc. is on either side of my ml. I can make the sound by being in drive with foot on brake, and giving it gas. as soon as rpm's reach a certin point it taps. What else could it be??? thanks

there might be lots of things that create sounds like that, did u check the injectors? fuel pressure regulator? PVC lines?
I'd that sound happened on my other cars before, and i "carelessly" tried some seafoam thru the pvc tube, and it disappeared after 1/2 pin of seafoam and the CEL disappeared. After I did that, I checked the piston top and found tons of carbon. Then, I used some redline SI-1 fuel treatment + seafoam soak, the car ran like a dream afterwards. But this experience is on my previous Japanese cars.

I did not check the injectors,fuel pressure regulatoror PVC because the ml runs great, no misses just this sound like a baseball card is in the wheel. I dropped the car off at the dealer last night for the power st. recall. Im hoping they will tell me what it is... ps they gave me a free loaner Smart car!

if u have ticking noise when the car's in motion, then it could be something else, but if it's only under load.... no CEL neither right? good luck with the dealership, tehy might charge you a hefty labor cost in diagnosis.
