Weird Noise

My new '02 ML320 makes an unusual screeching noise when I turn the car on. Most of the time, the only time I can get it to go away is by stopping the car, turning it off, waiting a sec, and then turning it on again. What is it???

fan belt need tightened/adjusted/replaced?

Not likely. Serpentine belts dont usually make any noise. Check the power steering fluid & pump. Just a thought.

I have a 2001 ML320 and it just started making the same noise. It's a very high pitched squeal from under the dash. I think it's related to the alarm system. There's no way a person can drive the vehicle while it's on. I had a headache after 10 seconds. I went by the dealership today after it happened to see if they might know what the cause was, but there weren't any service guys on duty. I'm going to give the 800 number a try and see what I can find out.

Yeah I doubt it is anything to do with the fan belt. It maybe the alarm and you're right, it does give an immediate headache. I'll give dealer a try after a while. To get rid of it I have to turn the car of and back on again...usually two or three times before it goes away. It's awfully disturbing.
