Try to get an 00 or newer. Try a search on the subject. this question has been asked quite a few times.

As AlBoston said.

Big changes occurred in '00, and several changes occurred in 2002. The newer the better!

Try to avoid anything before '00 - there have been all sorts of troubles.

Do a search in the ML forum for more information about the various differences in year models.

I have a 99. Truck is great. I have M1 package, which in my mind is a necessity in a 99. Adds a lot of practical and luxury features. I recently frove a 2003 and the difference in handling was not as significant as I would have thought.

I agree. The ML was awful it's first year, and has gotten better every year since. The 2002 and 2003 models are the best yet, although I still wouldn't buy one if I didn't work on them for a living.:p

I don't think the suspension has changed much since '98, if at all - the tire selections are better nowdays, though. I can hardley wait to get my old Dunlops the heave-ho!

Definitely the M1 package (power front seats, privacy glass, leather) is practically a must.

The M2 package (front seat memory, trip computer, lock box, folding mirrors) is not as big a deal - unless you switch drivers a lot (like I and my wife do!)

We had a 1998 ML320, and aside from a few minor rattles and the likes, it never let us down. MB has continuous improved the ML over its life...even the 1999 had a few changes, including standard ESP (unavailable on the 1998).

I know the only common mechanical issue on the 1998 or 1999 models is the with the fuel pump.

Yeah, the interior of older MLs is not quite up to traditional MB standards, but it still feels and drives like an MB. Which means it solid and feels planted to the road in any weather. And it was a great highway cruiser. Plus, it was unstoppable in the snow.

But now it has been traded in for a Jag S-Type...I miss that thing. My parents used to give me the ML for the winters up at school...and the one year I don't have it, it's one of the worst winters on record. So now I'm slipping and sliding around campus in my RWD C220.
