Water has leaked into my firewall?

Has anyone ever experienced this? During the recent torrential rains, water apparently ran through a crack in the weld seam near the passenger side hood hinge, and found its way into a cavity in the firewall rougly in the passenger side footwell. The water very audibly sloshes around. My indy has never seen anything like it, and the dealer has had one ML with this issue. They seem to think the only solution is to remove the front quarter panel on the passenger side, locate the spot on the firewall where the water is likely to be, and drill a hole to release the water.

Any thoughts?
