Sway bar bushings wearing out?

I have a 99 ML430 and the dealer advises me that the front sway bar bushings have worn out (I brought it in for a noise in the front end). Cost is $340 to update to newer style bushings and links. Mileage on vehicle is under 60k.

This seems like a very short life span to me. Anyone heard of this problem? Any hidden recalls or agreements to repair at a lower or no cost?

I've searched on google and this site for sway bar bushing info but didn't find anything.

Mine has a nice chunky clunking noise in the front...

The dealer said that the front bearings were a little loose. I'm taking it in a few weeks so they can change the bearings under warranty. I know a few other people that have had the noise in the front also. I think dealer fixed under warranty. But for $340, they should be changing more than just the bushings

What kind of noise do you hear? A creaking noise is usually the torsion bars rubbing on the frame at the rear mount. There's a shim that goes in between the two to stop the noise.

My wife told me there was a clunking sound from under the ML last night.....I took a look this morning....and found that the passenger side sway bar bushing is completely gone.

Looks like a simple DIY job....just need to buy OEM bushings....unless there are newer aftermarket poly bushings available. Anyone know?

Oh...btw...the ML has 103K miles on it.

Thanks.

Guys,

I just wanted to show pics of my bushing that was making noise....come to find out....the bushing is GONE!! Anyways, it seems as though it rip completely apart....my guess...no grease lubrication between the bushing and the sway bar....so it got dried out....and started to rub....and eventually to separate apart.

I bought new bushing kit for $15....I already installed the problem bushing....planning to change the other 3 bushings to be safe...hopefully this weekend.
